I use vanced and uBlock Origin, but I do also pay for YouTube. I watch more YouTube than anything, and I'm okay paying for it.

But I still use Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin, ad nauseum (really cool if you want to fuck with the algorithms on the stuff that gets through), etc.

I don't spend a lot of time on there, so some of the "new to me" stuff is probably fairly old.

But, I hopped on this weekend searching for videos on a specific topic and I was inundated with "Shorts". Brief clips that from what I gather contain no valuable information and which require you to be on crack or meth to keep up with? I dunno?

Then I noticed that an old account I used to watch way back in the day showed up on my subscriptions page, so I clicked in to look at that, and now they have accounts or videos that you have to pay to watch/subscribe to? Is this OnlyFans without the sex stuff now?

Then to top it off, the close captions are apparently 100% AI and every sentence displayed is something like "Gum potion trial and barrier for job put chin". Like I thought this stuff was supposed to be intelligent, it's basically right there in the name, or am I missing something?

I will gladly wait 1 minute of video loading before playing than watch 2 skippable ads that I need to click skip on.

Hell, I will go rampage and claim that I'll wait 5 minutes before video starts rather than watch a single 30s ad.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 hours ago

If adblock didn't work perfectly on YouTube, then I'd just entertain myself elsewhere.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 0 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I mean honestly that sounds kind of idiotic.

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Is there anything in your life worth standing up for? Doesn't sound like it. Sounds like you have zero experience with principal.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I just download them shits and delete when I'm done. Ffmpeg and VLC do a better job than YouTube even wants to do

[–] Amir@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 hours ago

NewPipe also never has a startup buffer

[–] Blass_Rose@pawb.social 12 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

It's funny, I found that switching tabs will immediately make it start playing the video. The idea of losing you entirely is too much, I guess

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 4 points 9 hours ago

Another option is closing YouTube and watching it later after pinchflat has downloaded it 😅

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 179 points 1 day ago (7 children)

The interruptions supposedly caused by my adblock are tiny compared to the interruptions when I turn it off.

[–] Elting@piefed.social 60 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah no shit. "Experiencing interuptions," nope I'm not actually thank you very much. Youtube has gone down enough in quality to where I would probably just dump it if they manage to hamfist the ads back in. The algo is straight up terrible at keeping me engaged. You watched one video about Y? Whole feed is now about Y for the next week. I find better videos browsing incognito sometimes.

[–] Quacksalber@sh.itjust.works 42 points 1 day ago (1 children)

On the other hand, you watched a bunch of videos of X consistently, but skipped the last 3 we recommended? You'll never see that topic again.

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Me: Searches for a very specific video that I know exists because I have seen it within the last three months.

YouTube: Nope, sorry, just can't find it. Don't know where it went. I don't think that video ever actually existed. I'm not even gonna show you results that contain your search terms because of how stupid I think you are.

In my case, it was looking for a specific video of pulling a 4.2 liter Jeep engine out of a CJ7. YouTube responded with dozens of videos on CJ5's and Wranglers, and the 4.0 liter engine, but not the 4.2 CJ7, and not the video I was looking for, and unfortunately it's not the Jeepin with Cool Guy video.

Although, in one scroll, they did offer to show me the exact same video three different times.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Inexplicably, despite having the same parent company, a google (or any engine really) search is going to have far better results for finding videos on youtube. I swear they stopped improving the internal search capability back in 2010, when they could have just punted to google.com ages ago.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Have you seen google photos ? The search function there is shockingly bad. Even when I know a photo exists of xyz, searching for xyz or words related to xyz finds either nothing at all, or unrelated images.

Their website is so laggy and slow I didn't realize it was intentional

[–] plutopos@lemmy.zip 13 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

I don't even get the "find out why" link. It's literally just a popup that says "experiencing interruptions?" with no explanation. Just there to taunt me

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago

FWIW, the link doesn't answer the question. It just shows a chart of your ISP's reliably but doesn't say whether or not it's to blame.

...

Actually, I don't even think they show the chart anymore. But regardless, you won't actually find out the reason why when you click the link.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

The one I get, the words "experiencing problems?" is the link. But really, the only "problem" I experience is a momentary black screen as it loads the video without the ad.

All the link does is take you to the support page where it explains how to disable your ad blocker.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So much malicious code going on to piss us off and force compliance. And normies have no idea this is a thing.

[–] mikesizachrist@lemmy.world 13 points 21 hours ago

Which, oh no i have to wait an extra 2 seconds of no ads, instead of waiting 15 seconds of ads that will continue playing unless i actively skip it

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 49 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I especially like the little glimpses to the advertisement hellscape I'm avoiding when my adblock plugin fails to work (usually right before they need an update). I especially like how the ads are rocking some kind of premium low-latency CDN while the rest of youtube is served from a cluster of used xboxes, presumably co-located in an abandoned Radio Shack in suburban Alaska. Treat your users better, Google.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (5 children)

I have ad blockers on my PC, use Smarttube on my Firestick, and ReVanced on my phone. And when someone sends me a youtube link in a group chat or something and I click it, it'll open the standard Youtube. 1/2 ads, 30+ seconds long, can't skip them.... I just don't even bother watching what you sent me.

[–] G4Z@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Because you can't open youtube in vanced, if I want to do that I just open it in youtube, cancel and then open vacned and play it from history.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Weird? I literally just open the YouTube app and proceed as normal.

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Try installing URLCheck (it's on F-Droid) and make it your default browser, then remove open-by-defaults from the YouTube app.

It should let you open in the ReVanced or better yet Morphe version of YouTube. If tapping the link doesn't open URLCheck, then "Share" the link and select URLCheck.

[–] fuck_u_spez_in_particular@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Simply disabling the Youtube app (since at least on my phone it can't be uninstalled) does the trick as well

[–] itsjustachairmary@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

It's what I did, yeah

[–] 1stQ@feddit.org 2 points 21 hours ago

Have you tried Grayjay?

Google: ~~Don’t~~ be evil

[–] cally@piefed.blahaj.zone 33 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What interruptions, Youtube? Literally nothing changed other than the fact there aren't ads playing.

[–] Th4tGuyII@fedia.io 37 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Ah yes, experience a <15 second loading buffer...

Or watch potentially multiple entire minute long, unskippable adverts.

Honestly part of me has considered paying for YouTube premium - but aside from not having to fight off ADs, I don't care about the other perks, and am more than happy to just give to the creators directly without Google getting a cut.

I'm using Firefox with Ublock Origin, and it's really funny that youtube videos open without any problems or delays, but still, the questions about interruptions appear. They failed to ruin my user experience, but still fucking hope they did.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Tip: if you use a chrome user agent, it won't have delays

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I don't even do that and get no delays (Linux Mint, Firefox, ublock)

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Maybe they excluded Linux or didn't roll out the thing to everyone

But it does happen to me on Winslop 11 and changing UA fixes it

[–] Luisp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

No YouTube I'm not experiencing any interruptions
