Something I notice comparing pictures, how the makeup is less notable in newest entries of Star Trek.
I have the feeling Deep Space Nine was the peak of makeup effects, like nowdays is a lost art.

Yeah because of the demands by the changeling members of the cast. They have a really strong union.
Representation counts for a lot when no-one looks like you at school.
Warp speed is still very far.
EDIT: But seriously talking, this "why they didn’t just hire alien actors" joke is the equivalent of "I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter".
It's worth noting that they had scaled Ro's makeup back considerably by her final TNG appearance:

Thought that was Admiral Cain off of Battlestar Galactica at first.
(It is the same actress, but also similar clothing and hairstyle)
Almost everything about TV makup has changed since then.
Those looks in the 80s & 90s were designed for SD broadcast on CRT televisions. Today's 4K HDR TVs are substantially better in every way. You don't need to push the makup as far for it to look good.
Also tastes have changed. In the 80s and 90s bold colorful looks were much more common and popular. Today, not so much. The trend is for natural looking makup. Shows and movies reflect the tastes of their time.
So yah, TV character makup has changed a lot over the last 35 years.
For good or for bad?
Well that's a stylistic choice. It doesn't matter really, does it?

I loved PIC S3 and definitely seeing Ro Laren again, but yeah, I did notice the makeup was a lot more subtle than in her TNG appearances.
Now I wonder if it was always supposed to be that subtle but had to be "exaggerated" a bit back then to show up on older TVs. Kind of like how the Addams Family set was mostly pink so it appeared correctly on old black and white TV sets.
Not so sure about that. Actually tv in the '90s was not that bad. In terms of resolution it looked similar to 480p video, but without any artifacts. Furthermore due to the nature of how a CRT works, those tvs actually had less motion blur than flat screens.
TNG and DS9 (and early Voyager) episodes were mastered to Beta tapes which had a best case functional resolution of 280p. This is why the TNG Blu-ray’s took so much effort and why they haven’t done Blu-ray’s of DS9 or Voyager, there aren’t film masters to scan they have to be recreated from the original negatives.
Beta tapes are 480i, 720x480 interlaced
That's more than enough resolution to clearly identify faces.
Only ED-Beta was capable of that and it wasn’t released until after TNG was on the air.
The GameBoy Advance had a 240x160 resolution and they released video carts for that. I wasn’t saying it was too low to see faces, just commenting on the technical details of TNG, etc.
This is the most star trek fan debate of all time
