porky-point "Why are we wasting all this money on Screwworm prevention? There hasn't been a case since 1966!"

[–] MoonMelon@lemmy.ml 29 points 6 days ago

Have they tried calling the screw worm woke? We could have contained it in Panama with a minimal push of resources to recover the post-COVID loss of containment, but that would have required cooperating with those people. Oh well, enjoy cattle ranchers!

Not taking action to contain this was a massive blunder by the Biden admin. (Also trump 1 I guess?)

The collapse of empire starts off silently.

[–] context@hexbear.net 16 points 6 days ago (1 children)

many americans will experience the collapse simply as "one day the mcdonald's ran out of hamburgers and they never got restocked"

Doesn’t the fact that this was detected “one mile from the Texas border” imply that this is already a problem in Mexico? How big of a problem is it there?

[–] FumpyAer@hexbear.net 21 points 6 days ago (1 children)

At least 26,216 screwworm cases have been identified across Mexico, and upward of 2,700 remain active, the USDA said.

Well that is sub-optimal.

No money for a proper coms team after Elon and Trump cut 22% of the budget that funded the teams trying to prevent this.

I have never read em dashes in english texts before 2024.

Not the ones used for dialogue lines I mean.

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

It's not the em dashes entirely but definitely the odd use of them

That final line is very inhuman

For no reason in particular I feel this is a great time to start "prepping" a bunch of TVP every week to be used as a meat substitute in my cooking.

Dread it.

Run from it.

Financially enforced veganism arrives all the same.

As if the brainworms weren't enough already.

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 17 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

The brain and screw worms have always maintained a close partnership. One in the brain two in your leg we like to say.

[–] Posadas@hexbear.net 12 points 6 days ago

What happens when a Mommy brainstorm and a Daddy screw screwworm love each other very much?

[–] hellinkilla@hexbear.net 2 points 6 days ago

https://screwworm.gov/ doesnt load anything for me. I assume it'll be something along the lines of covid.gov once it's up and running.
