It has been 80 years, can't they power wash or paint or something?

[–] Lurkmore@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why bother if they're proud?

[–] JustinTheGM@ttrpg.network 8 points 1 month ago (3 children)

To be utterly fair, they could be proud of having defeated the prior tenants. Equivalent of putting your enemy's head on a pike.

But they aren’t, considering as they are embracing fascism, colonialism, war mongering, Russophobia and actively support Nazis in Ukraine. They are the Nazis still they never “defeated the prior tenants”. The prior tenants became the leaders of NATO.

Most of the area dedicated to the Nazi Party Gathering area has been repurposed into Langwasser, a commieblock (but western) residential neighborhood with a 2/3 majority of foreigners and people with at least one foreign parent ("Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund").

Nuremberg has recently reached 51% of its population being either first generation foreigners or having a foreign background (Eastern Europeans, Turks, Arabs and Vietnamese mostly). It's a city largely divided between north and south, with the north being wealthier and more German, and the south poorer and mostly foreign.

The poorest areas are also the ones getting most gentrified, because that's where the fucking students move in. There's areas in Gostenhof, an area that used to vote for the Left Party, that was won by the "Politbande", an electoral list of the culture scene for the culture scene, which got 2% elsewhere. If you hear someone speak English, instead of Turkish on the street - that's likely a gentrifier.

Monument protection laws, I believe. The building is old enough.

Before and after:

I believe they have laws against potentially tampering with the condition of historic buildings beyond removing illegal symbols. Not sure why Burger King couldn't just put their sign over it though, considering it's literally above an entrance

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

Wouldn't want the signage to be in people's faces. Just a nice, small, functional sign over the door. No needless decoration either.

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I would like one Reichstag with cheese please.

Sorry ma'am the reichstag fryer's on fire

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think it's based to repurpose literal Nazi stuff with banal business. Is my opinion wrong and I'm bad for thinking so?

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

it is based to reuse the building, but I feel like an exception to the "dont touch historic buildings" law could be made in this instance. you don't have to re-face it, just smooth it out and make it match the rest of the brick!

[–] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

german historic building preservation is incredibly anal about this even going by german standards to the point I'm genuinely surprised the faceless megacorp would hedge their bet on this property

To make matters worse it's at best done at a county level and is embedded in germanys deeply "whatever" building codes which results in at best like 3 jerk-off architectural dipshits deciding what goes and what doesn't with little legal recourse

Like not to jump in the trenches for Burger King here but surely unless you install a plaque every bit of historical pathos is gone from the building once it becomes a burger king

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, even in Poland some chain shops placed smack dab in the middle of the city in the "historic" areas have to change their corporate signage to a bland shade of brown and gray to "blend in"

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

i don't mind that, fuck their corporate advertising

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I feel like the real problem is the chain store being there in the first place, not its colors (the advertising still stands but redesigned)

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

one thing at a time

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

would have been perfect if it was mcdonalds instead.

[–] chemicalwonka@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 month ago

They could have just cleaned up the traces, but it seems to me like there's some kind of fetish for the symbol

[–] TheBroodian@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

I'm sorry, fucking what?
