Deshittification

State of affairs for technology seem bad? But what is being done to change it? And what could be done by you so it changes at least for yourself?

A community to talk about the reversal of enshittification, be it news, actions that could be done, etc.

A person that sees no solution has no reason to keep going.

Valve made the Steam Controller CAD & STL files available, pushing again for modding, right-to-fix, and so on!

Pushing for Linux, Proton, open hardware (even if partially), seemingly at the point of obsession...

I suspect they do so after Microsoft released Windows Live, a competitor to Steam that came by default in the system Valve supported.

If someone at Valve had a change of heart, or just want to save their hides after that, either way, a major company pushing for things that result in #deshittification is a win-win situation afaik. =)

(Also breaking the post like this due to bridging it to Bluesky and fediverse microblogging)

I suspect it has something to do with that time Windows bluescreened while Gabe was holding a presentation:

Sweet! I'm going to 3d print one and sit in front of my TV making spaceship noises pretending I'm playing a game!

This is good, now if only the controllers were in stock for more than 30 minutes!

😬

But jokes aside, I'd say it's closer to being part of an oligopoly. And when a player of such market dynamic moves in an "undesirable" way (to the others involved), it lessens maneuver capacity from the others.
