While this quote can be found all over the internet, attributed to Nietzsche, I'm unable to find even a single source reference, no mention anywhere of from where it originates. Do you know for certain that it's from Nietzsche? I'm starting to get the feeling that it has been misattributed to him.
I think it might be a different translation. Should be Human, all too human: Book 6, Aphorism 303.
I found another translation from R.J. Hollingdale.
We often contradict an opinion for no other reason than that we do not like the tone in which it expressed.

There are some valid reasons I can entertain that 9-11 was either planned by the US, or at least allowed to happen without interference. I don't have a strong belief either way, but I'm open to conversation.
I will not, however, engage with someone who brings up jet fuel melting beams. You sound like a dolt, and the exact mechanism of destruction doesn't factor into the matter.
I mean that's... Like, a lot of what they've released from the Epstein files was stuff so crazy that just talking about it makes you sound like a lunatic, I feel like that happens a lot. There are real conspiracies that are grounded in material aims and of a realistic scope, but there's so much added in that most reasonable people don't have the energy to sift through all the bullshit. Trying to unravel real conspiracies will ruin your life if you're not clever and careful.
The thing is while the jet fuel would not have outright melted steel beams, it would certainly have weakened them enough to compromise the building's structural integrity. But ironically a lot of conspiracy theorists care more about being right than learning the truth, so will not care about nuance or acting in good faith.
You can see similar issues with anti-vaxers objecting to vaccines as unsafe because of outliers. Correlation is enough to prove them right on their points but unimportant for statistics that counter them.
I will defend someone who says something I don't agree with, if they're being respectful and willing to admit they are wrong or open to changing their mind.
I won't defend someone saying something I think is right or I totally agree with, if they're being a jackass about it.
I've seen threads where both things happen consecutively, and they both get downvoted anyway π .
Maybe you can just agree to disagree expecting people to just admit their wrong and agree with you isβ¦ going to cause you a lot of trouble in life. Unless the person is way out in left field just agree to disagree, even then youβre probably better off just walking away from the conversation
Yeah absolutely there's a lot of topics and subjective stuff where agreement to disagree can happen. Being capable of admitting wrong is different than readily admitting wrong at the first disagreement and I do not expect that, but there's a stubborn kind of tone that I can tell someone will not consider any contrary evidence, which lessens the need to continue the conversation.
I don't care if someone is rude. I care if they're willing to discuss in good faith.
Someone being nice to me on here but seems to be manipulative is far worse in my view than someone who is aggressive and nasty but intellectually honest.
I can understand that, but to me they are at least loosely linked. Poor tone clouds a good argument and often is an indicator of a discussion in bad faith.
I will admit I have seen a handful of counter-examples over 3 years on Lemmy, where one or two commentors came out of the gate with an angry and accusatory stance, but both were able to reconcile with each other in later replies with cooler heads. I have more often seen much longer threads where flamebait begets a flamewar without going anywhere useful.
I've been in both. I tend to be pretty impatient and want to get to the crux of a core philosophical disagreement rather than waste time on reading people post 101 stuff at me though.

Some people spend too much time online and it shows. There are some very drama filled spaces where it seems like people purposely follow things that make them angry and assume everyone else should be as angry as they are.
I know the algorithms encourage it, but people need to just disengage and stop giving bandwidth to the rage bait stuff.

I actually feels like that's the opposite, where someone you usually can't stand makes a very well articulated and reasonable point. I enjoy those moments because it showcases dynamic character, "This person you dislike is still capable of critical thinking and worth engaging with from time to time." That tends to restore my faith in humanity a lot lol

Seems like handhelds are more under the radar, yeah. They definitely catch some strays, though. There was a good amount of Steamdeck vs Switch 2 a year ago I remember. Which, like, it's different shit entirely. Having both is the ideal setup for a handheld fan.
