Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Ontario, California (near Los Angeles), not Canada.

[–] Orcocracy@hexbear.net 47 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So it’s abbreviated as Ontario, CA? That’s great.

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago

Opening an English themed bar named London in Ontario, CA just to confuse people.

"Yeah, we're going to a birthday thing in London this weekend."

"You're going to England for a weekend??"

"No, London in Ontario, the one with the Beefeaters special"

"You're going to Canada for gin??!"

"No, London in Ontario in California"

Also Werewolves of London will be playing on repeat.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 42 points 1 month ago (1 children)

he certainly stuck to his message. only complaints im seeing is that he possibly endangered others but the place looked totally closed and empty*___*

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 44 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

I have a relative that did something similar to a financial institution while it was closed.

If you are gonna do adventures folks make sure only property and non civilian targets are harmed.

My name is partly dedicated to him actually. Also if you are wondering he was never caught and died in a 90s version of a goon cave of health issues brought on by age and chronic alcoholism in a motel in long Beach.

He was a weird dude but one of the real ones.

Lmao that emoji is more apt than you can possibly imagine.

[–] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I picked it for a reason lol, the IRA did their best to avoid civilian casualties and primarily targeted property and icons of oppression (I consider occupying forces to be property)

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

Not a member but I believe he was affiliated, we did learn after his death that he was part of the Weathermen.

Gets kicked out of the UK for doing revolutionary shit against the brits during the troubles

Gets put on a boat to the US

Immediately joins up with the one revolutionary group blowing shit up and firebombs a bank of america

You wish you had a cool unc like me.

collaborators

So not civilians

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm not saying they can't be valid targets, but you don't need to be paramilitary to be a collaborator, you can just have given testimony or something about what you saw one time and thereby be a collaborator.

[–] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Everyone always shits on the IRA (provos) specifically for the way they handled collaborators, but man, just look at how literally ever occupational war has been carried out since WW2. They were downright civil compared to literally every other conflict.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

Certainly as guerillas in a colony existing right next to its colonial master, which was easily among the most powerful and depraved countries in the world, they were in an extremely desperate position throughout.

[–] mickey@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago

Nice lore drop. For legal reasons I will avoid commenting on whether I find this to be based. Him managing to STFU about it and live out his life certainly seems like a rare quality.

This is where revolutionaries are, got that proletarian understanding on lock, compared to reformists

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Except getting away with it unfortunately

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

One might think so, but burning 1000 warehouses over 1000 prisoner sentences is an exchange most conscious masses should be able to take. Put it another way, better than getting shot in a cop city protest

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

they still do warehouses? I thought everything was zero inventory nowadays

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Everyone wishes they had zero inventory.

However, less quippy, as long as everything in that warehouse has a known buyer, it can be considered 'zero inventory'. It's a production philosophy, not an exact description. I doubt that is what this company was doing though.
