Oh fantastic, an opportunity to drop a decade and a half old viral video!

The "you're a little late" bit always cracks me up.

My life was changed forever when I found out this was a cover song.

and the original(s - they do two distinctly different versions) are both amazing, arguably better than this cover.

look up EDNASWAP - Torn for the original versions

Interesting. She recently released a cover album that is a lot of fun. Didn't realize torn was a cover too.

One of my favorite inside jokes (population 1) is singing this in the style of how I’d imagine Rip Torn would. I don’t have an explanation for this, it just makes me happy. Bonus fun, how would the music video convey “the perfect sky’s Rip Torn”

[-] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 7 months ago

Like this would work for me:

RIP Rip Torn.

So perfect you can almost hear it shouting at Hank

edit: added many versions by Lis/Ednaswap/Trine

Great song!

Smash hit in the nineties. Few are aware that this is actually a cover of a song initially written by the three future members of Ednaswap, Scott Cutler, Phil Thornalley, and Anne Preven, for Preven’s solo work. It was first recorded in 1993 in Danish by Lis Sørensen as “Brændt” (which translates as “Burned”). It was recorded by Ednaswap themselves two years later in 1995.

In 1997, Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia covered the song for her debut studio album Left of the Middle. Imbruglia’s version was recorded in Kilburn, London with David Munday (lead guitar), Phil Thornalley of Ednaswap (bass, rhythm guitars, production), Chuck Sabo (drums), Henry Binns, Sam Hardaker (Zero 7) (drum programming) and Katrina Leskanich, lead singer of Katrina and the Waves (background vocals). It was mixed by Nigel Godrich. Released as a single, Imbruglia’s version became a worldwide hit, being considered as an “All Time Pop Hit”.

Most famous from the 1997 cover by Natalie Imbruglia, this song was originally written in 1993 by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven and Phil Thornalley for Preven to sing solo, which she did a number of times live. It was first recorded by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, renamed as “Brændt” (Danish for “Burned”). Two years later, in 1995, it was covered by Cutler and Preven’s own band, Ednaswap. Ednaswap actually re-recorded the song for their second album, 1997’s Wacko Magneto. They had planned on releasing the new version as their second single after “Clown Show”. But by that time, Imbruglia’s version was a runaway smash hit and the plans were scuttled.

This song was originally written in 1993 by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven and Phil Thornalley for Preven in English as “Torn”. Scott and Preven’s band Ednaswap played it live a number of times.

Lis Sørensen has the first recording of the song, translated into Danish by Elizabeth Gjerluff Nielsen. The title “Brændt” translates as “Burned”.

Norwegian singer Trine Rein covered the Ednaswap song Torn in 1996 (One year before Ednaswap’s second version and Natalie Imbruglia’s version were released) on her second album Beneath My Skin. It was released as the album’s first single.

Phil Thornalley, who produced Ednaswap’s first version and Natalie Imbruglia’s version also produced Trine Rein’s version.
