Hey there everyone!

It's been a nice run, but all good things come to an end as they say.

This nice thing comes to an end on Jul 2nd, 2026 which is when the domain expires and I've decided to not renew it.

It's been a nice run and I'm grateful to all the active users of our small Fediverse home!

click here if you're interested in the reasonAs for the reason for this decision, it's because Lemmy and the Threadiverse in general didn't turn out into what I envisioned it would be.

For a hot minute it was honestly great but eventually all that remained was tankies propaganda and depressing news. And probably a few non-political communities that sadly don't really offset it for me.

I was pondering on keeping it running even if I don't really use it that much anymore, but then Hetzner announced a significant price change (and you can bet that Lemmy is an unoptimized resource hog) which is not the reason on its own, but the proverbial last straw.

So yeah, that's it I guess. I promised that if the instance ever goes down, I'll let everyone know with enough time and I believe I managed to do it.

I'll maintain the instance until it expires and I'll keep on moderating it of course but it's probably a good time to start looking for a new Threadiverse home.

Yet again, thank you very much to everyone who has been part of this instance! And to many of the friendly admins of other instances!

Your contribution to the Fediverse and Lemmy was bigger than many users. You will be missed.

Who knows what the future has in store for us. Perhaps you'll be compelled to return to Lemmy in the future, perhaps not. Either way, I wish you well.

Ah. I just signed up! But that's just how the fediverse goes.

Thanks for offering the instance! I know hosting must be a crazy huge project!

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Oh bummer, that's me....

Thanks for letting me know, I'll end my recurring donation when it goes down.

I understand the lack of political nuance, and everything having to be hard right or hard left, but that's the way we have been programmed, and how our algorithms are programmed, something we have to accept because I honestly don't see the path to changing it.

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 9 points 2 months ago

Thank you for the support so far!

Well, the only path I see is to not participate which is what I did when Facebook let me down years ago, then the same with Reddit and now Lemmy.

[–] NewDark@lemmings.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think you might be confused (maybe).

Lemmings.world != lemmy.world

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Yup, I'm oblivious....

I have my reasons for being oblivious, but I'm not proud.

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 months ago

The Threadiverse may have too many tankies and not enough active communities, but with Reddit becoming greedier and greedier by the day, it's the only viable alternative.

Blocking .ml, Hexbear, and Lemmygrad solves a lot of the tankie problem, but it could certainly still use more people to support non-news or politics communities.

[–] NewDark@lemmings.world 6 points 2 months ago

I appreciate it. This has been a nice instance. Good luck in your future endeavors.

[–] mcSlibinas@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Mastodon a bit better, at least less tankies.

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

tankies

I tried out Mastodon for a bit, I had a different experience.

Unfortunately there really just isn't much of a space online for a political moderate. If you aren't true hard-line right or true hard-line left then there is just no opportunity for dialog online.

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 3 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Ain't that the truth! As someone who's center-left for the most part, I feel that every day.

But my real issue is pretty much that Lemmy has almost no other content besides political one - I'm fine not fitting in with the online masses politically but I kinda can't find anything else to do on here.

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 3 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I wouldn't even consider myself "center left". I'm like 95% straight down the line liberal.

But because I believe crazy things like "maybe some abortions are actually ethically dubious", and "numerous good rigorous studies have demonstrated that religion is generally socially good and healthy actually", and "a well regulated capitalism is a good economic system actually."

So, you know, I'm a Nazi sympathiser.

I have offered to take over Lemmings.world, to preserve all the posts and users.

@rikudou@lemmings.world would think about it. Haven’t heard anything since.

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 1 points 2 months ago

This is awesome news! Hopefully they let you do it.

[–] Naich@lemmings.world 5 points 2 months ago

I'm sorry to hear it's going. I've really enjoyed using it, and you have administered it brilliantly. Thanks you for your time and effort, and good luck with whatever you do next.

[–] skaifer@lemmings.world 4 points 2 months ago

Awh no, that's me, I'm lemming 😭 well, at least that's good opportunity to try piefed now.

[–] FrostyTrichs@crazypeople.online 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Sorry to hear you're shutting down. Thanks for helping Lemmy grow to what it is today.

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 3 points 2 months ago

Thanks for the kind words!

[–] dude@lemmings.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Is anyone aware whether there’s any way to migrate a community to another instance keeping the subscribers?

Anyways, thanks for hosting the instance during all these years!

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago

Piefed does have a migration tool from what I remember of lemm.ee's shutdown

[–] flint@lemmings.world 3 points 2 months ago

I'm still fairly new here and haven't had much time to interact via this instance. But must say that the onboarding, which I initially had some trouble with, was quickly made smooth and friendly after a short chat exchange. I will remember you for that and hope you'll do great wherever you go next.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Well damn. Just seeing this. I basically walked away for the same reasons a year ago, though mine's still online because I got talked into keeping Tesseract alive and needed an instance I could test against. You were one of the original Rexodous instances and probably helped me many times in the group chat getting mine up and going in the early days.

My instance is pretty well curated to get rid of the propaganda, violent rhetoric, and other undesirable aspects, so if you wanna pop in, you're free to sign up on mine (hell, I'd even let you be an admin). And since it's my own test instance (more or less anyway), if you wanna keep playing around with some of your fedi tools, you're welcome to. If not, and you never wanna see the place ever again, believe me, I totally get that.

Regardless, thanks for trying to build something better with us and sorry it didn't work out. I share the same frustrations you're expressing here.

Yep, and things around here keep getting even more crazy. Lemmy has devolved into practically every post to be about how xxxx president is destroying the world and xxxx should be president instead, or xxxx needs to be shot and hung publically. Regardless of post topic. Any disagreement, over anything, devolves into "nazi!!" and "fascist!" name calling. Regardless of post topic. lol

Lemmy and Piefed have become the haven of nerdy antisocial trolls who got banned from reddit for being too extremist and antisocial. lol

So I fired up my own instance (not using this username) and right away just banned, blocked, filtered basically everything/everyone that annoys me about the fediverse. And locked it down to be single user.

And finally I can enjoy Lemmy again. Lemmy will stop growing and die off eventually. Too many people come here because of the great idea that it is, only to find out that it's full of groupthink trolls. Then leave. I have seen so many good posters just give up and leave.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Sad but true. Matches everything I've seen and complained about over the last ~3 years. It looked so promising at first and then....turned into everything you just said. Lol, we should compare block/ban lists sometime - there's probably a LOT of overlap. Are you at doomprepper.com by chance?

Honestly, the Fediverse needs a schism if it's going to survive beyond being a haven for people that are too toxic to be platformed anywhere else. Not so much a split based on ideology but on pushing the extremist, antisocial, violent, troll people to the fringe instances so the sane people might actually stick around.

I thought we might be seeing the first steps of that with LW taking a stand against .nexus, but they've since re-fedded and I'm not at all confident they're going to cut off dbzer0 and nexus which are two of the worst widely federated instances for platforming violent crazies (grad and hexbear are worse but they're pretty widely blocked, and .ml is sadly too big for most instances to cut off).

It's totally possible to block and ban and defederate enough to make this a nice place, but it's a LOT of never-ending, thankless work as I'm sure you've noticed. The problem is few admins want to actually do that (and some are part of the problem), so the default experience for someone who isn't a crazy, violent antisocial extremist nutjob (i.e. most people) makes them want to nope out immediately.

[–] parody@lemmings.world 2 points 2 months ago

rikudou…

Legend.

Thank you!! See you on another instance in a happy future!

[–] echo@lemmings.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Bummer... thank you for keeping it going while you did.

Anyone have suggestions on where to go... all opinions appreciated; even the snarky ones....

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

The closest I found to the same vibe are, Lemmy.today, lemmy.zip, lemmy.wtf, and lemmy.dbzer0.com. Those four are pretty much the "live and let live" instances that don't try to control what you say or read.

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 1 points 2 months ago

It's been a really great instance! Thank you for your service to the fediverse!

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Looks like the instance went down a bit earlier than expected

[–] SphericalTooth@lemmings.world 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Where's PapaSkwat supposed to post his stealthy propaganda now?!?

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 0 points 2 months ago

I'm not sure what you mean. What "stealthy propaganda" have I posted? What do you mean?
