Hey there everyone!

It's been a nice run, but all good things come to an end as they say.

This nice thing comes to an end on Jul 2nd, 2026 which is when the domain expires and I've decided to not renew it.

It's been a nice run and I'm grateful to all the active users of our small Fediverse home!

click here if you're interested in the reasonAs for the reason for this decision, it's because Lemmy and the Threadiverse in general didn't turn out into what I envisioned it would be.

For a hot minute it was honestly great but eventually all that remained was tankies propaganda and depressing news. And probably a few non-political communities that sadly don't really offset it for me.

I was pondering on keeping it running even if I don't really use it that much anymore, but then Hetzner announced a significant price change (and you can bet that Lemmy is an unoptimized resource hog) which is not the reason on its own, but the proverbial last straw.

So yeah, that's it I guess. I promised that if the instance ever goes down, I'll let everyone know with enough time and I believe I managed to do it.

I'll maintain the instance until it expires and I'll keep on moderating it of course but it's probably a good time to start looking for a new Threadiverse home.

Yet again, thank you very much to everyone who has been part of this instance! And to many of the friendly admins of other instances!

rikudou…

Legend.

Thank you!! See you on another instance in a happy future!

Bummer... thank you for keeping it going while you did.

Anyone have suggestions on where to go... all opinions appreciated; even the snarky ones....

The closest I found to the same vibe are, Lemmy.today, lemmy.zip, lemmy.wtf, and lemmy.dbzer0.com. Those four are pretty much the "live and let live" instances that don't try to control what you say or read.

I have offered to take over Lemmings.world, to preserve all the posts and users.

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 1 points 2 days ago

This is awesome news! Hopefully they let you do it.

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 1 points 2 days ago

It's been a really great instance! Thank you for your service to the fediverse!

[–] skaifer@lemmings.world 4 points 4 days ago

Awh no, that's me, I'm lemming 😭 well, at least that's good opportunity to try piefed now.

[–] NewDark@lemmings.world 6 points 5 days ago

I appreciate it. This has been a nice instance. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Your contribution to the Fediverse and Lemmy was bigger than many users. You will be missed.

Who knows what the future has in store for us. Perhaps you'll be compelled to return to Lemmy in the future, perhaps not. Either way, I wish you well.

Sorry to hear you're shutting down. Thanks for helping Lemmy grow to what it is today.

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 2 points 2 days ago

Thanks for the kind words!

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 9 points 6 days ago

Ah. I just signed up! But that's just how the fediverse goes.

Thanks for offering the instance! I know hosting must be a crazy huge project!

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 7 points 6 days ago

The Threadiverse may have too many tankies and not enough active communities, but with Reddit becoming greedier and greedier by the day, it's the only viable alternative.

Blocking .ml, Hexbear, and Lemmygrad solves a lot of the tankie problem, but it could certainly still use more people to support non-news or politics communities.

[–] flint@lemmings.world 3 points 5 days ago

I'm still fairly new here and haven't had much time to interact via this instance. But must say that the onboarding, which I initially had some trouble with, was quickly made smooth and friendly after a short chat exchange. I will remember you for that and hope you'll do great wherever you go next.

[–] dude@lemmings.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Is anyone aware whether there’s any way to migrate a community to another instance keeping the subscribers?

Anyways, thanks for hosting the instance during all these years!

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago

Piefed does have a migration tool from what I remember of lemm.ee's shutdown

[–] Naich@lemmings.world 5 points 5 days ago

I'm sorry to hear it's going. I've really enjoyed using it, and you have administered it brilliantly. Thanks you for your time and effort, and good luck with whatever you do next.

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Oh bummer, that's me....

Thanks for letting me know, I'll end my recurring donation when it goes down.

I understand the lack of political nuance, and everything having to be hard right or hard left, but that's the way we have been programmed, and how our algorithms are programmed, something we have to accept because I honestly don't see the path to changing it.

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 9 points 6 days ago

Thank you for the support so far!

Well, the only path I see is to not participate which is what I did when Facebook let me down years ago, then the same with Reddit and now Lemmy.

[–] NewDark@lemmings.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I think you might be confused (maybe).

Lemmings.world != lemmy.world

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Yup, I'm oblivious....

I have my reasons for being oblivious, but I'm not proud.

[–] mcSlibinas@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Mastodon a bit better, at least less tankies.

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

tankies

I tried out Mastodon for a bit, I had a different experience.

Unfortunately there really just isn't much of a space online for a political moderate. If you aren't true hard-line right or true hard-line left then there is just no opportunity for dialog online.

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Ain't that the truth! As someone who's center-left for the most part, I feel that every day.

But my real issue is pretty much that Lemmy has almost no other content besides political one - I'm fine not fitting in with the online masses politically but I kinda can't find anything else to do on here.

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 0 points 2 days ago

But my real issue is pretty much that Lemmy has almost no other content besides political one

Yep, this is pretty annoying. I posted some general news to our news sub, and some people got mad because they didn't think it was "news." Meaning, to them, if it's not political, it's not news. I personally barely read political news. lol

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I wouldn't even consider myself "center left". I'm like 95% straight down the line liberal.

But because I believe crazy things like "maybe some abortions are actually ethically dubious", and "numerous good rigorous studies have demonstrated that religion is generally socially good and healthy actually", and "a well regulated capitalism is a good economic system actually."

So, you know, I'm a Nazi sympathiser.

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Looking at your downvotes, people are proving your theory. Lemmy is so extreme about stuff... lol

I upvoted ya tho! :)

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 2 points 2 days ago

I happened to notice that earlier this morning too, and I got a good chuckle out of it. I do wonder what people are thinking as they down vote.

I especially appreciate the guy who got the downvoted for just acknowledging my point that mods shouldn't ban people for saying something they disagree with.

[–] SphericalTooth@lemmings.world 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Where's PapaSkwat supposed to post his stealthy propaganda now?!?

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 0 points 2 days ago

I'm not sure what you mean. What "stealthy propaganda" have I posted? What do you mean?

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 0 points 6 days ago (5 children)

Do you have another recommendation for an instance that won't ban me for saying something like "I think marijuana use should be strictly regulated."

[–] PapaSkwat@lemmings.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

lemmy.today is the only other free speech instance besides Lemmings.world that I could find. Great admins too. They are cool with whatever, as long as you're not posting illegal stuff (US-based).

[–] Tuuktuuk@piefed.europe.pub 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You might want to switch to a PieFed instance while you are at it. It's the same content, but with a LOT more features: polls, flairs, feeds (=multireddits), comments federate instead of just posts, you can get notifications for every post in a quiet comm if you so wish, etc.

Anarchist.nexus might be good for you; they let you be largely whatever you are. All goes, as long as you're not a fascist, tankie, or similar. It's not forbidden to be against weed there. Nor is it forbidden to be for weed either, for that matter.
You can also just click "register" on any PieFed instance to see a broader list. Or go to http://piefed.fediverse.observer/ to see what exists.

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 0 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sounds good, but I can't be on a site called "Anarchist.nexus". 😂

And I'm not an Anarchist. I'm pretty much the opposite of that.

[–] Tuuktuuk@piefed.europe.pub 2 points 4 days ago

Nord.pub is hosted physically in Finland. Try that? :)

Or, since you've been happy to be on a German server, then piefed.social is a very very stable instance. And if you want no defederations, then piefed.zip.

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Can't say I have one, as that was pretty much the niche (freedom of speech where you're allowed to say anything as long as it's not illegal or hurting other people) I tried to fill because it was empty. Haven't really checked newer instances, so don't know if there's one with similar mindset.

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 4 points 6 days ago

Well, I appreciate your effort.

[–] Jerry@feddit.online 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

You really were banned on other instances for saying marijuana use should be strictly regulated?

[–] 1dalm@lemmings.world 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Not whole Lemmy instances, but I got banned from the r/millennials subreddit for that about a year ago. I really want even being that antagonistic about it. I was just sharing scholarly peer reviewed articles with people that refused to believe that marijuana might have some negative side effects. Didn't even get a warning. Boom, perma ban.

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

Most instances will be fine with that, we've also had discussions on our instance and !canada@lemmy.ca in the past about similar studies.

This place isn't immune to powertripping mods and admins, but generally you CAN find places without that.

[–] Jerry@feddit.online 4 points 6 days ago

Sigh. Yeah, that's not right to get banned for having a different opinion than a moderator.

[–] Alfredolin@sopuli.xyz 2 points 6 days ago

There should be several? E.g. sopuli?
