He sent me this picture and a video clip and all but explicitly threatened to chase me around with a rubber/foam mallet like whack-a-x games use. Because he wants to play "whack a commie".

Damn, I really hate the Red Scare.

In case you don't know already: it's from season 2 of Fallout

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And soon to be in next fallout game.

I've seen "whack a commie" in Fallout 4. There's a machine that at least exists as a prop in Nuka World, basically right where the Commie Whacker always spawns. I think it's an utterly hilarious joke weapon because it's just plain funny to do serious damage with a foam mallet from an arcade game. It's classic Cold War nonsense and I love it. I hate people who take that kind of nonsense seriously, but I'd play "whack a commie". I miss the sheer absurdity of the Cold War sometimes.

I completely missed that. Although when doing nuka world was not paying much attention

Yeah, it's all just part of that Cold War America vibe that Fallout as a world captures beautifully. I dunno. Some commies really hate it because of the people who like it unironically, but I really love it in an ironic sense. Like, I miss the Cold War because I miss the USSR, but I also kinda miss the aesthetics of the Western world at the time, y'know? So yeah, Fallout makes fun of the Cold War in a way that hits perfectly for me.

Unfortunately, he's a decent human being when he's not getting into political arguments, and he makes my mum happy, and I can't socially afford to be directly responsible for anything that takes happiness away from her. Now, if he wasn't family and he was more explicitly fascist... yeah, ethical removal of fascism might be called for.

That said, I do have access to ultimately harmless toy guns. So next time he threatens to play Whack a Commie with a foam or inflatable hammer, I'll get one of those out to play Shoot a Fascist. Roughly equal physical damage done. Sounds fun!

"Whack a Commie"? Yeah, that could be fun. Some of our sectarian arguments here could certainly be referred to as playing Whack a Revisionist, for what it's worth.

Is he aware that the subtext of Whack-A-Mole in plain speech is referring to a permanent problem that you can never get rid of, and the best you can hope for is to treat the symptoms as fast as possible though they keep popping up?

Kind of a self-own

He is aware of that. He does think of communists as a persistent pest. The one thing we both agree on is that the entire Cold War was the West playing whack-a-commie. We just disagree on whether they should have bothered.

Dad, for the last time I don't want you to whack me off.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

That would work if my brother said it. When I make that type of joke, he just keeps pushing anyway.
