Pwech. I don't play D&D!

I play Pathfinder...

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 50 points 1 month ago (3 children)

It just occurred to me that Pathfinder is to D&D what Linux is to Windows. More technically complex, less moral baggage, less mainstream and its fans won't shut up about it.

[–] UNY0N@lemmy.wtf 38 points 1 month ago (3 children)

What a fitting anology! I'm going to start saying "I play Pathfinder BTW" at the end of every TTRPG comment now, I love it hahahahaha.

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 month ago

Would you believe me if I said I didn't check your comment history before posting that? I just assumed that a programmer who plays Pathfinder also uses Linux.

[–] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That could get old. But...

I play Pathfinder, by the way.

[–] Iron_Lynx@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Do you happen to also use Arch?

[–] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 3 points 1 month ago

Do you happen to also use Arch?

No. If I did, I would say so!

Haha.

(Apologies to my arch-user peers.)

"I play Pathfinder BTW"

Looks like a Vampire player thing, but may also worx for you :)

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

In our defense it's a pain to get people to try it.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago

Just like Linux.

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

and pathfinder is way more open (AoN), just like linux

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

And Wizards of the Coast (since bought by Hasbro) are like Microsoft, trying to control the platform as closely as possible, trying to define how people use their platform

[–] lib1@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I can feel the blank stare that this correction would elicit in the vast majority of people. To normies it’s like saying you eat fruit rounds instead of fruit loops.

[–] Diurnambu1e@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If you understand why it is corrected you are a geek.

[–] lib1@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Oh 100% I’m DMing Draw Steel tomorrow night

[–] eerongal@ttrpg.network 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I haven't heard terribly many people talk about draw steel, honestly. I'd be interested to hear what you think about it after trying it out.

[–] lib1@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

From our session 0, character creation is really neat. Everything is very modular and flavorful. I went in with a few choices for systems depending on how people wanted to approach the campaign and we chose Draw Steel because the group is made up of people who enjoy crunchy combat. I’ll try and remember to follow up after I’ve run a session

[–] orenj@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 1 month ago

Hell yeah sibling, id also be interested in hearing how that goes. I've been wanting to run DS since it came out but you know how long campaigns go

[–] CptBread@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Well depends on the programming language they use. D&D uses classes and that's a big no no for some.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)
[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago

if you need to… 😉

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 15 points 1 month ago

To be fair, it wasn't a programmer that got me into D&D... he worked for the QA department.

[–] 5too@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (3 children)

What? No, I haven't played since a few sessions decades ago!

GURPS, on the other hand... Along with Ironsworn, maybe a little Savage Worlds...

[–] owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Stop, stop, you've already proven their point

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

Gods! I used to love playing GURPS Autoduel!

[–] phase@lemmy.8th.world 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Never touched Dungeon and Dragons' stuff. And I am a dev.

I don't want to point again the impression that some DnD players seem to think that DnD is the only way to play ttrpg... but well.. it's tempting, doesn't it?

[–] Lemming421@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It’s easier to tell someone you play D&D than it is to say you play Pathfinder, get the “… what?” question and then say “it’s for people who think D&D doesn’t have enough rules”

[–] phase@lemmy.8th.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes and let's not disturb them. They may discover something interesting? And perhaps avoid to disgust people from our hobby by explaining that math is a must and classes too? I'm not even sure if I am trolling on purpose or because of the topic.

[–] Lemming421@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

If they show interest, you can go into detail. If they don’t, that’s previous seconds of life you can use for more productive things.

[–] dreugeworst@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 month ago

not true at all! I play Magic, not D&D

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Aielman15@lemmy.world 23 points 1 month ago

We prefer the term "species" nowadays.

[–] No_Money_Just_Change@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago

Not everybody at my company that knows how to program also plays dnd. Just everybody who is good at it.

[–] Phantaminum@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago
[–] stenAanden@feddit.dk 6 points 1 month ago

How about if you like nerdy media but isn't naturally attracted to high paying tech fields 😭

[–] SweetCitrusBuzz@beehaw.org 4 points 1 month ago

Ah, I guess this is why I prefer other ttrpgs.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (3 children)

"Dungeons and Dragons OR D&D? What does D&D stand for if not Dungeons and Dragons?

[–] scops@reddthat.com 7 points 1 month ago

I think the text is cut from a longer form document. The author may have been declaring the abbreviation for use in the rest of the text.

[–] Thorry@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago

The or in this context refers to also known as. Like when you say what the fuck or WTF for short.

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Some acronyms have many definitions, like CBT.

[–] SaneMartigan@aussie.zone 5 points 1 month ago

Clifford's Brick Transport.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I guess I'm not a real nerd after all

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 1 month ago

Well, it said "geeks" not "nerds" so you're fine.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Did not know that I was from the Caucasian race AND te Geek race!

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'd want to try out D&&D but I can't seem to find any group nearby

[–] eerongal@ttrpg.network 3 points 1 month ago

there's actually great resources for getting started online. There's a site called start playing games dedicated to matching new people to a DM. Note that services like that cost money. There's also the virtual tabletop roll20 which has a group finder for you to find a game. It will have a mix of free and paid games. Alternatively, you can crowdsource that such as on r/lfg on reddit (unfortunately the LFGs here on lemmy don't seem to be active enough to find games), or through various discord servers, including the official D&D discord. Another that has reasonably active LFG type sections to try is the Fantasy grounds (another VTT) discord.

For in person play, you can also look in to local gaming stores that might run adventurer's league, which is the sort of 'official' play wizards of the coast sanctions at local stores and at conventions.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I have never been so fairly and accurately insulted! Shame on you!

[–] psud@aussie.zone 2 points 1 month ago

I only play d&d because the accountant that hosts the game has all those 3.5 books. Games I host are Rifts or After the Bomb or TMNT

I play whatever ttrpg lets me hang out with my friends

I wonder whether the guy who used to run robotech games here is still within a thousand kilometres
