Having a little anxiety here because this is by far the best app. I purchased a lifetime Ultra membership and it wasn't until I replaced my phone and couldn't restore it, did I find out the developer hasn't updated or posted in 2 years. (Somehow the Ultra got restored a couple days later).

I really hope the dev continued this, or issues a statement regarding the status. I also would pay for a version for Reddit (yeah I know, I just can't quit that completely yet)

Edit: thanks for the responses. So far, Voyager seems to be the closest to Sync and best alternative for me. Really sucks the dev just abandon this.

Heh, as a person that still uses it every 6 hours, what do you use?

[โ€“] sabreW4K3@lazysoci.al 17 points 1 month ago

Summit these days.

[โ€“] loutr@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

I gave up on Sync a few months back. I currently use Thunder, it works well and has all the features I need. But I may switch to summit, which seems to load content noticeably faster.

[โ€“] ArchEngel@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

I've been using (and really enjoying) Thunder.

[โ€“] lena@gregtech.eu 2 points 1 month ago

Voyager is amazing

[โ€“] mormund@feddit.org 33 points 1 month ago (3 children)

For those looking for an alternative, I switched to Voyager after it became clear Sync was abandoned. It feels similar enough to me.

I'm on Voyager, really happily with it

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I could personally not vibe with Voyager at all. Maybe because I'm not on iOS, I don't know. But it didn't really feel similar to Sync to me.

There's an option to change it to an android Material style UI if you like that, however it's material 2 and not material 3

[โ€“] atrielienz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've been looking for this option.

Settings > Appearance > Themes > Device mode > Android

Tbh, as an Android user, I like the iOS look

[โ€“] MrBadApple@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Does it have the ability to swipe in and out of posts like Sync? Being able to navigate without using the back button is the reason I keep using Sync so far.

Does on iOS, dunno about android but Iโ€™d assume so

[โ€“] LemUrun@pawb.social 27 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The support is dead. The app itself will be dead, when Lemmy 1.0 arrive. It's sad, because other clients aren't close to Sync in terms of behaviour.

[โ€“] Twig@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 month ago (4 children)

I'm still using Sync. Is there anything remotely similar out there?

[โ€“] lastweakness@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Summit and Thunder are cool. Especially Summit.

Summit does. Swipe right to go back up.

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Summit is the best option. It's not exactly the same - it's its own thing and not intended to be a Sync clone - but having tried like a dozen apps after finally leaving Sync behind Summit was the only one that felt right in all the ways I wanted.

It also has a very active dev, who regularly incorporates user suggestions and feature requests.

That's the thing about sync. It just feels right, somehow. And I agree. Summit is closest in that respect.

I can't seem to upvote from the feed in compact mode. Tap on thumbnail, read meme, tap back, tap vote button, go to full post page, tap upvote, tap back. Maddening.

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 points 1 month ago

I'm also a compact user, but I just use swipe shortcuts anyway. Short swipe to upvote, long swipe to downvote, longest swipe to reply.

Another vote for Summit. It is a little different, of course, but it's the closest I've found. The dev is also super responsive and works on the app actively.

[โ€“] LemUrun@pawb.social 3 points 1 month ago

I'm using iOS right now. I'm using Sync too, but on my Edge 40 Neo I have Summit. But it doesn't look as good as Sync. We need more Lemmy apps to bring more diversity.

It's been dead for a while, I jumped ship to Summit. Pretty similar vibe, works well and I'm happy.

[โ€“] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As others have said, it isn't dead, but don't expect any future support or updates.

[โ€“] petersr@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

How do you define dead if not by "no future updates"?

[โ€“] MathiasTCK@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No future updates and no longer works

[โ€“] petersr@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Good point. It could stop working if api calls change.

Lack of core function, and no sign of future updates in this case.

I'd also apply the term to other situations, such as a github page being taken down without any word from development about it, or similar.

Or, if an app is otherwise functional, but can't be installed/accessed via apk/app store (like the keyboard app swype that works fine, but you have to jump through hoops to install on newer android versions and is no longer listed in any store)

[โ€“] mintiefresh@piefed.social 7 points 1 month ago

I switch between Boost, Voyager and Summit. I think they're all pretty decent and they all have support for Piefed as well, so that's a nice bonus.

[โ€“] blackfire@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Connect has been my go to client. Works perfectly

[โ€“] rimu@piefed.social 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've never used Sync but the screenshots on Google Play remind me of Blorp.

[โ€“] ObviouslyNotBanana@piefed.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I tried it a while ago and didn't like it but I must say, it's a lot closer to feeling right than it was. It seems pretty nice.

[โ€“] moseschrute@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Thank you! Iโ€™ve put a lot of work into making Blorp good this past year. Let me know if there is still something keeping you from making the switch, and Iโ€™ll see if I can make it better.

I still can't find a client that works as well as sync on a tablet. Boost and summit have tablet modes, but sync lets you open several posts in tabs, where boost and summit you can only open one at a time. (Also summits post feed is a little cramped in tablet mode and I can't find a setting to make it a bit wider).

[โ€“] galaxy_nova@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I use Mlem personally.

[โ€“] Fleur_@aussie.zone 4 points 1 month ago

Idk man I keep seeing people cry about no updates; I'm yet to experience something that needs updating.

[โ€“] pixeltree@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 month ago

I use the alx frontend for the site that blahaj hosts personally. Used to use sync but it got some deal breaker bugs that the developer never touched. He does tend to come and go, so he'll probably be back at some point, but who knows when
