I think like 98% of mobile games are pretty much trash, but there are some diamonds in the rough.

In the past I've enjoyed:

  • Monument Valley
  • 2048
  • Fruit Merge
  • Hashi
  • Papers Please
  • Baba is You
  • Balatro

I'm getting bored of my usual picks lately. I'm looking for something that's quick to jump in and out to pass the time, not something heavy. But hard puzzles or strategy totally fit!

Is the FF Tactics port good? Better alternatives?

Been playing a ton of dicey dungeons recently.

[–] Pulptastic@midwest.social 1 points 48 minutes ago

Enjoy Sudoku, CrossMe, Universal Paperclips. The first two I casually play now and then, the last one I obsess about and play nonstop to completion once or twice a year.

Occationally one of these physics mini-games:

  • Soccer physics
  • Wrestle jump 2
  • Basic biking

https://ottoojala.itch.io/

And for a short (fart-joke) laugh:
https://boern.itch.io/diarrhea-4
(but that's Browser/Windows/Linux based - not Android directly)

P.S. Still searching for a modern Android port of Spaghetti and Marshmallows

[–] SqueakySpider@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 14 minutes ago

Thank you for mentioning spaghetti and marshmallows, I never would've remembered that game otherwise! Too bad there's no version currently though.

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I don't know if this counts, but on my old android tablet back in the day, I use to play Titanfall Assault (?)

Really never played a mobile game as fun as that. I miss it whenever I think about it.

My favorite game on Android is currently Krumit's Tale, followed by Shattered Pixel Dungeon.

Hole.io

It's completely ad-laden garbage but I looove the art style for some reason and the actual gameplay outside of the weird resource management shit they added to sell in-game currency is soooo satisfying.

[–] helpImTrappedOnline@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Solomon's Keep and Solomon's Boneyard are fun

[–] mugthol@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 10 hours ago

Unnamed space idle - an idle game that is completely free, without ads and more complex than normal idle games

[–] groet@feddit.org 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

You (and anyone reading) should replace 2048 with "threes". Its the original game that 2048 is based on (developer claims they never knew threes already existed but not sure about that), it has way more details and love aaaaaand it actually works as a game. In 2048 you win by going down, left, down, left, down, left, repeat until high score. In threes you actually have to think

[–] tatterdemalion@programming.dev 1 points 4 hours ago

In 2048 you win by going down, left, down, left, down, left, repeat until high score.

That's not true. But I can see how threes would be harder. There's also a similar game called "suika" or "fruit merge" that is quite fun.

[–] Lileath@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 11 hours ago

I like unciv which is an open source clone of civ 5 I think. If you like games like Vampire survivors I would also recommend Magic Survival which to my knowledge is the or one of the first games in that style for mobiles

[–] orenj@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 11 hours ago

F-zero GX, lol

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 16 hours ago

Been playing Open Sudoku, it's great

[–] sicarius@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

Slice and dice

I would hate to know how many hours I've spent on this game. It's disgustingly addictive. I love it.

If you're open minded to emulation there are tons of options for consoles on android. The ones I use are AetherSX2 for PS2 games, myBoy for GBA, PPSSPP for PSP, and then if you want to get real crazy OpenMW for Morrowind and Winulator for 2000s era PC games (I have TESIV Oblivion running on a dog water Android phone at 30 FPS with Winulator).

[–] lucg@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

My partner and I often collaborate on Lexica (basically Boggle but you can choose some game modes) while waiting for food in a restaurant. Sometimes also Lichess of late

Simon Tatham's puzzle game collection is already mentioned in the thread. I can only recommend it again

"Slay" is a paid little puzzle game that's a lot of fun (iirc like 5€ one time up front via Google Play). Very intuitive but I've not seen the concept before. The author made a bunch of small fun Windows games and ported this particular one to Android (maybe also available on the dark side, who knows). With a honorable mention of Antiyoy (expanding upon the concept) that you can also find there, the open source implementation is called Feudal Tactics

Didn’t read the description. Only the title. My answer: Detroit Become Human Alt answer: Custom Robo? Not sure it counts tho.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon may be the best android game available at the moment.

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

Over 300 items.

menopausal brain shuts down

[–] baconsunday@lemmy.zip 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Definitely this. I didn't think it would be so great. I can't stop playing lol, I suck at it too, but its so fun to die and try again.

[–] ace_garp@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

It's had more constant tweaks than 99% of games.

Very refined and balanced.

The biggest tip I didn't know when starting, was to draw an enemy through a door and surprise attack them as they come through the door.

Now that they're out on mobile I gotta go with Subnautica and Little Nightmares

[–] yessikg@fedia.io 10 points 1 day ago

Unciv - Open source Civ game based on Civ V

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Limbo is pretty great.

[–] fin@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

mindustry is good

Also I'm playing Morrowind on OpenMW these days

Edit: And STK!

[–] ArchEngel@lemmy.ca 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

What?! That's hilarious that Morrowind can now be a phone game - I may have to try this soon!

[–] fin@sh.itjust.works 3 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

Try the latest release of OMW on GitHub. F-droid one didn't work for me

https://github.com/xyzz/openmw-android

The source's archived but it's still playable

[–] als@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

My most played android game is probably the port of Simon Tatham's puzzle games. It's available on GitHub, F-Droid or Google Play.

My other pick would be TIC-80, there's thousands of games on there

[–] MajorasTerribleFate@lemmy.zip 3 points 21 hours ago

I got hooked on Net in Simon Tatham's, and wanted more features (sliding the board around in Wrapping mode, especially). Ended up at https://hexapipes.vercel.app/ which plays well enough in a mobile browser. Lots of tile shapes, sizes wrapping vs. regular.

For anyone interested: your have way more options for favorite game on Android than you think.

Emulation works great on modern phones. Eden emulator runs Switch games and some work very well with just touchscreen controls (e.g. Into the Breach).

If you're ok with on screen controllers or with carrying around something like an 8bit Zero 2or Micro, then you could emulate a mind-blowing number of consoles and games.

[–] arararagi@ani.social 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I was expecting some dlsite games since this has the NSFW tags.

[–] tatterdemalion@programming.dev 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I assume a mod tagged this as NSFW, b/c I didn't do it (intentionally anyway).

I find it odd, b/c if browsing this thread is not suitable for your workplace, then really browsing any thread at work is NSFW.

EDIT: I removed the tag. Hopefully it was just an accident on my part and mod doesn't get mad at me.

[–] ScrambledEggs@lazysoci.al 3 points 1 day ago

You shouldn't be playing mobile games at work. Therefore, NSFW

[–] TheMcG@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Mini metro has to be my top. Simple costs money so no ads (mandatory for me). You are basically just creating subway lines to move shares around and manage flow.

Happy to see a fellow Hashiwokakero enjoyer. ♥️

For free games, I would like to add Gobble (by Never Ads) to the list. Unfortunately, I cannot find it in Google Play Store right now.

For paid games, After, Inc. is pretty nice.

[–] Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Slay the Spire

Polytopia

Bloons 6

LoLdle

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

How is the slay the spire Port on Android?

I have a couple hundred hours in the steam version, is the Android version as good.

[–] Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Its the same game. The biggest issue I have is that my fingers move too fast and i play the wrong card sometimes.

[–] Atlusb@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Stardew valley is fairly solid

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Terraria. It's $5.

[–] 6nk06@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago
  • All the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_Escape games (Rusty Lake)
  • SPACEPLAN (idle game with great scenario and great music)
  • the Conceptis puzzles (free stuff for free)
  • Desert Golfing, and Golf on Mars

[–] BuboScandiacus@mander.xyz 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Magic survival

The game that inspired vampire survivors. Also it's way better than VS.
