Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

"Guys, TikTok's predatory and socially corrosive behavior needs to be addressed, so we require a company known far and wide for their impeccable integrity and commitment to ethics. Oh, hey, I know..!"

Edit: In case any of the younger TikTok crowd doesn't know who Larry Ellison is, let me summarize it for you: Run. Run as swiftly as the wind, and don't stop to look back. Whatever you liked about TikTok? Yeah, that's over. Stop reading this and just run you fools.

The old joke: Know what Oracle stands for? One Raging Asshole Called Larry Ellison

There is much truth in jest, as the saying goes

[–] ErrorCode@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago (1 children)

What is the difference between Larry Ellison and God? God doesn't want to be Larry Ellison.

Alternatively: Do you know the difference between Larry Ellison and God? Neither does Larry Ellison.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 11 points 4 months ago

"What's the difference between Oracle and the Boy Scouts?"

"The Boy Scouts are led by adults"

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 8 points 4 months ago

I remember it being Rich Asshole, but I guess either one works

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 33 points 4 months ago (1 children)

We're living in an oraclarchy.

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 19 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

That is the messiest, least palatable mouth feel portmanteau I've ever had the displeasure of pronouncing. I will be stealing that.

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I think it's run by Larvid Ellison

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Sounds like an Elden Ring boss. Larvid Ellison, the fused

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 28 points 4 months ago

Do not fall into the trap of anthropomorphising Larry Ellison. You need to think of Larry Ellison the way you think of a lawnmower. You don't anthropomorphize your lawnmower, the lawnmower just mows the lawn, you stick your hand in there and it'll chop it off, the end. You don't think 'oh, the lawnmower hates me' -- lawnmower doesn't give a shit about you, lawnmower can't hate you. Don't anthropomorphize the lawnmower. Don't fall into that trap about Oracle.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire

[–] Ironfist79@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

That isn't any better.

[–] thefluffiest@feddit.nl 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Time to leave TikTok. Now.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 18 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Way ahead of you: I never signed up for that trash

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Never understood the appeal of a constant stream of short form videos so I missed that bus as well. Don't regret it one bit.

[–] compostgoblin@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

The appeal isn’t the format of the content per se, it’s the algorithm. The way it learns exactly what will keep you swiping makes it addictively entertaining.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Been blocking it at the router for years.

wheres pj when you need to track a whole other set of oracle bullsit?

[–] Eh_I@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That's going to be a laggy-ass algorithm. Don't try to predict more than one video at once or the whole thing will freeze up.

[–] August27th@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

And the back button will break the entire app.

[–] Eh_I@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I love how it straight up says in the error message that you pressed a browser button.

[–] pinheadednightmare@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I will delete Tik tok once the sale happens. I encourage everyone else to do the same if you are still on it when it sells.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 15 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Why not delete it now? In fact why not block them at the network level via DNS or IP filtering too while you’re at it since their tracking scripts are all over websites and apps and don’t really care whether you have an account?

[–] credo@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Huh. Not palintir? Color me surprised.

[–] thann@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 months ago

Merger anyone?
