I hope so. I loved the first 2 seasons, but a lot of season 3 just didn’t seem to make sense.

It did however give us the 4 1/2 vulcans episode. I think it was worth it. Specifically the after credits scene.

that episode was one of the reasons i didn’t like this season.

I felt it was a fun episode and I loved the post-credits scene but you are right, I also feel the same way.

While I can enjoy the campiness of the episode it felt like it was mocking Star Trek just for laughs. I don’t mind some of the one-off episodes but SNW seemed to really lean into that this season where the overarching story was put in the background behind fun little episodes. It made the season feel disjointed, uneven and with little payoff.

I like those fun little side quest episodes but not at the expense of the main theme for the show. It feels like since the Lower Decks crossover and LD ending there is this bleed over affect where SNW episodes tend to have story foundations in fun or funny scenarios. It makes the serious episodes feel not so serious. This season felt like the recipe for SNW was not quite right and I hope for next season they try to orient it more towards a serious ST show about adventure and exploration with a little bit of humor to break the serious tone from time to time.

agreed, the premise was fine, trek has done race swapping episodes like that before. SNW just did it way too campy, in a season already filled with lots of camp. 3-4 campy episodes in a 26 episode season is a lot different than 3-4 campy episodes in a 10 episode season.

It also didn’t help that the main story arc for s3 was a terrible trek story. Evil space demons. again, perhaps acceptable as a standalone episode here or there but when half of your episodes are built around something like that you aren’t writing sci-fi anymore.

and the main story arc was not even sci-fi. it was space fantasy with lasers like star wars.

Honestly, it can hardly be worse than any season of Discovery or Picard. I quite liked a good chunk of Strange New Worlds.

such a low bar they’ve set for themselves.

Picard was a new show every season, each season completely ignoring the last.

Season 1: Pilot for a new show with a whole new crew. AKA "Let's fix the mess we made with Nemesis and the JJ movie".

Season 2: Nuke the entirety of the "new crew adventures" from season 1, including most of the cast, and turn the show into Galactica '84 with an awkward shoehorned romance. Only highlight was Q's send off. AKA "We needed a series ending, but we fucked it".

Season 3: Once again we treat the prior season as if it didn't even happen. This is the show most people actually wanted Season 1 to be. AKA "TNG Season 8". Unfortunately they once again got greedy and finished the series with a setup for a new series that will never happen...again.

You can watch any season independently and be ok. Such a weird show.

Season 2, and really any Sci-Fi or fantasy that abandons its own setting to travel to "our world" in time or dimension, is doing it either for budget reasons or because somebody wanted or needed to mail it in. With COVID, it could have been "all of the above."

Why I have no interest in the new Tron. Jared leto aside I don't want to see Tron in LA. Why the fuck would I? I want to see cool computer graphics with an awesome electronica soundtrack. Who cheaper out and made it freaking LA?!

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago

Have you actually listened to any of them?

[–] wetbeardhairs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 months ago

I hope they stay more in the sci- side of sci-fi. Those last episodes were bollocks.

[–] bless@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It might be my terrible memory, but have any producers ever promised that they will make the upcoming season worse?

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

clearly the story is they agree season 3 was not up to their standards.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 months ago

The last few episodes made no sense. Oh this magical energy thing invaded a crew member. Ok he's dead that was quick. Then boom he miraculously cloned himself and then traveled through a Stargate and the whole danger was wrapped up in 20min.

I liked this season. Except for the spock chapel corby thing.

[–] Schal330@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

I enjoyed season 3. It wasn't the best and I wasn't hooked, and the last episode felt rushed, but overall it was entertaining. S1 and S2 were great, and they have a valid reason for S3 being a bit iffy.

Looking forward to S4 and 5. SNW has been the best trek in a very long time.

[–] MrFunkEdude@piefed.social 3 points 3 months ago

I'm convinced session three was produced by theater kids.

[–] jaxxed@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

It would be easy to solve: Don't write 11 episodes of character development, with 5 minutes in the last episode showing a looming threat.

I couldn't get through season 2.
