Eduardo Galeano, born on September 3rd in 1940, was a Uruguayan journalist and author known for, among other texts, his work "Open Veins of Latin America", which the editors of Monthly Review Press called "perhaps the finest description of the primary accumulation of capital since Marx".

Galeano began his career as a political cartoonist and journalist - at fourteen, he was contributing political cartoons to the socialist newspaper "El Sol". At 20, he was the managing director of "Marcha", a storied weekly in Uruguay.

Some of his high profile work as a journalist includes an interview with Juan PerΓ³n, a laudatory profile of Che Guevara, and a portrait of Pu Yi, the last emperor of China, who had just completed his Maoist re-education in a nondescript building on the outskirts of Beijing.

Galeano is perhaps best known for his book "Open Veins of Latin America", which details how, through five centuries of plunder by European conquistadors and American corporations, the region's abundant natural resources had been extracted to enrich a few local elites and many foreign interests.

The editors of Monthly Review Press, which published the U.S. edition, described the book as "perhaps the finest description of the primary accumulation of capital since Marx." President Hugo ChΓ‘vez gave a Spanish-language copy of Open Veins to President Barack Obama on his first diplomatic visit to the region.

"The human murder by poverty in Latin America is secret: every year, without making a sound, three Hiroshima bombs explode over communities that have become accustomed to suffering with clenched teeth."

I discovered some fun(tm) things about baldur's gate 3 lately on linux.

  1. if you're using a CPU that needs core parking (like a CPU with P/E cores, or an X3D chip with more than one CCD) AND using gamemoderun to run the game, the audio in the game won't work. The solution is not to use gamemoderun (or disable core parking in its ini file), as the game will do its own core parking and if you're doing it it'll crash trying to spawn audio threads. Apparently this affects Windows users using Process Lasso as well!

  2. If you love Wayland and want to get on the XWayland-free gravy train, you might know that using GE-Proton gives you new env vars you can use PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 (No XWayland needed! For me this means more stable VRR, better Alt-Tab support, etc.) and even PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 (HDR without Gamescope! Works only on some games, apparently not on Vulkan-native games yet). I lost several hours tonight to this trying to play the damn game over the Internet with a friend and suffering from what appeared to be network issues - my character would rubber-band, it would take seconds and multiple clicks to activate an ability, there'd be huge delays in any action I'd take. Even though my framerate was a smooth 170 or w/e the entire time! No stuttering! Nope, it was PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND. Removing that fixed it. Why does running in Wayland directly cause this game to act like its running over a 56k modem (only when connected to another player)? I don't know, why does parking cores kill audio?? I hear this is an issue on Windows too, or was at some point, if you had VSync off.

I suffered. Maybe you won't have to.

My therapist told me point blank that I have BPD and although I seem to be much more self-aware than other sufferers, it has caused damage to my relationship. I feel like a monster now, I know that therapy will help and things will only get better but I can't help but think of the harm I have already caused due to not knowing which of my behaviors are normal or not and feel guilty af. I truly love my gf, I hope that I can salvage it somehow

It's so cool how I can add "entry level" into my job search query, set the required experience to "entry-level," and not find a single job that has no experience required in the hour I put into job hunting today. Software development? No. IT? Still no. Lineman? Not here. Just a job, any fucking job that pays enough for a single person to live in a 400 sq ft apartment without roommates? Never. It's so cool how fucking worthless degrees are.

if the line is longer than fifteen minutes we should be legally allowed to leave (with our items)

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 14 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Unironically yes, long lines are due to stores abusing staff by not scheduling enough people to meet demand.

Reminds me of someone on reddit-logo complaining that their relative stole a TV from Walmart during Black Friday when all the tills were backed up. They were whining about how stealing from a big box store was setting a bad example while all their relatives were just laughing about how Black Friday sales are a real steal LMFAO

Of course all the comments were people saying shit like "at least Walmart has surveillance systems & they'll arrest your relatives", real bootlicker shit

These people do nothing about covid / disability and wonder why people might not have the time or energy to do anything besides sit at home. Hell, even non-disabled and non-sick people have the life drained out of them every day. The fact that people still have to go to work despite these awful conditions is the ultimate proof of economic coercion that should be undeniable.

i'm still thinking about badempanada's descent into coalposting. I think there is this like strain of 'leftslop' (per se) in which the core of their politics does not venture much beyond self-flagellation and revenge fantasy and it's almost as slop as twitter posts that are like "GENERAL STRIKE TOMORROW" but it gets to run the ball unchecked comparatively because it drapes itself in Leninist/Maoist rhetorical tendencies instead of Bernie-ism as well as having much more of an edge to them. call it Vulgar Treatlerism or whatever. people who offload their responsibility to politick onto the third world. maybe Terminal Terror Brain. antisocialism? to borrow from Kurvitz, maybe nihil-mat is a good descriptor? whatever you want to call it.

it's the adage about how if your politics are vulgar anti-Americanism you will be correct 98% of the time. like those "GENERAL STRIKE TOMORROW" posters they arrive at the conclusion without doing the work. It's a good way to be correct on forpol and international relations but inconsistent on everything else.

I don't know. I'm spitballing here. I think everyone's posting too much in the end.

[–] WhyEssEff@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

this shit is just inspiring me to actually read books more and start actually working on the process to join either PSL or even a decent DSA caucus. I can't let my politics devolve into this. I have to pick up the Braudel on the shelf.

The more I learn about doing things in unreal the more mad I get at a lot of common game design choices. You're telling me I could easily have bullet casings that stick around permanently, just by setting a timer when firing so that after a little while, the shell (physics object) automatically despawn and spawns a shell (static mesh) to sit there and be decoration for a fraction of the memory? And most games just don't do this because they either can't be bothered, didn't have the time, or need every byte of memory for ray-traced boob sweat?

My friend was right when he said that since we're reaching the limits of graphical fidelity, the new prize is physical fidelity. I'm not good enough to do anything about that, but one thing I am committed to is forensic fidelity: shells, glass shards and bloodstains must stay exactly where they are until you leave the level. Blood was flying out of enemies and running in rivulets down the walls in Nocturne 20 years ago! This is my matt-jokerfied squib opinion. The player should be able to finish a level, then hand off the controls to someone who wasn't there and didn't watch, and if that person is paying attention they should be able to reconstruct the scene like Willem Dafoe in Boondock Saints. I see anything less as compromising immersion.

Paint the Town Red is a good example of this approach

These fuckers at Nyx (a credit card payment processor) put a FIFTY DOLLAR hold on my account for charging my motorcycle. Fifty dollars for a transaction that would at most cost me ten. And it's been there in "pending" on my bank statement for a week now, preventing me from spending my own fucking money. I can't even get my bank to do anything about it while it's pending, I have to wait for it to expire on its own.

This shit needs to be illegal. There is no fucking reason why, in the modern world, the payment cannot automatically update to the correct amount as soon as the transaction completes - or that a hold even needs to be put on the account in the first place. When you're low on funds, it will tell you how much you have left, just query that number and then tell the charging station/gas pump/whatever else that that's the maximum amount it can dispense!

The only thing that makes sense to me is that they get something out of it, like they get to claim all of the money holds as assets and that adds up to a lot for a corporation, or some other financial services grifting bullshit. Fuck.

edit: oh and the punchline to all of this is that the charging station that created this account hold didn't even work. Both of my charges from the last time I rode my bike were done on Chargepoint stations (Nyx is used by Electrify America I think), and the prices have been correctly reflected in my account the entire time they've existed.

The Doomposting is getting worse.

My ex reached out, and it wont look like it's going good. Keeping an eye on the world at large while also having your own world to manage is draining, it's difficult, and i dont think it's offering me any additional capacity to happiness. "The world's on fire, but at least i have someone to be with during it" was my mindset. I'm redoubling my efforts, then i'm hearing that there are way more unemployed people than job openings, like we're expecting another crash to come. So far only one job's called me back, and it's to drive a truck. Fuck it, i might as well.

But with EVERYTHING happening in America, how can anyone think we can be fine? Following politics over a long view is like watching river water levels over the course of decades, you can see through to something bigger happening and you're powerless to stop things.

I dont think we've seen true doomerism yet. I really dont think people have hit their point of hopelessness. Something's coming that's going to hurt very badly. Tension that should lead to a bone breaking.

What happened to cherry tomatoes? Every grocery store used to have them, now it's all grape tomatoes or those new bland things. Cherubs/angel sweet/etc stay fresh longer but they don't taste the same as real cherry tomatoes. Even when a store does have them, they seem different, less acidic, less flavorful.
