I believe you are correct but only because insects (among others) and unborn babies can't read.

Sure! It's just a silly perception thing. Logically I know where the diaphragm is and how it works (roughly lol), but the simpler part of my brain wants to believe that breathing just makes my lungs/chest expand forward. Not sure if that helps at all lol

I've tried this. Definitely don't recommend putting a huge nail in your chest though. It'll be a nail in your coffin for you.
As someone who breathes I can confirm.
I just did it and I think I almost squashed my heart. I didn't really need to know what that feels like.
