We were thinking about it some time ago, and now that a user came up with a proposal as well we thought why not. The idea is to add possibility to use username@disr.it along side your username@disroot.org JID for XMPP (just like email). We could implement it in two ways:

  1. as alias - Using same roster but possibility to connect/be contacted with two additional addresses
  2. as new account - Seperate account meaning clean roster, avatar etc. just using same credentials to login

Which one would you prefer?

(for reference original user's suggestion - https://git.disroot.org/Disroot/Disroot-Project/issues/1212 )

i think you have to no rush. is a good thought, but i really dont know if there is a real need to this on xmpp...

  • for example for mail, there is obviously a real case use, both by the server receive email, and by the user. In xmpp by a fast thinking, found no use. Also in xmpp more things happen automatically by the clients, a right click on a name, an enter or an esc on some dialog, are fast interactions also happen only once. after that each user is known by its nick... So no obvious usage...
  • also, taste matter most, but getgoogleoff is some how ugly for an xmpp account, while make a sense of other account cases
  • same like address space, domain, accounts name, especially clean ones, are something valuable in web, and i think we're going to realise this more and more, as time pass
  • who knows, if for example complete the new registration maybe need cute addresses to tied things between disroot, git.disroot, scribe.disroot, ( i mean what id user@scribe is not available for user@disroot user ... ), or what...
  • i would propose to keep that aliases, ( dont waste any kind of space ), for maybe a future use.

I like the idea of having a shorter alias from my account so I can tell people another way 'disr.it'. But after reading others opinions and explanations, seems to be more usefull with a different roster, cause I could cut or disconnect that account without leaving xmpp.

And so, managing different kind of chat or contacta separatedly, knowing that you could do that in the same app.

What is your reasoning behind it? Cause I noticed on XMPP when talking about it in the hangout, people were afraid others would take the username. But that's not the case. Your username would be basically able to login with different domains so there is no concern of username snatched.

Maybe they thinked about xmpp open to registration like standalone. Like the scribe that everyone can sign-up and "take" the username from people at disroot.

The xmpp addresses will be for your account @disroot only so noone can register your username at getgoogleoff.me or disr.it to take it for xmpp like people can "take" your user at git scribe and nexcloud i guess on disroot

I even registred at scribe some hours ago so no one takes hate from me lol

People are saying aliasses because they will not be logged on each account so they will not see the mess like three chats for the same conversation.

Make it separated hosts so will use it who wants to. Not a big deal for people that will just use disroot.org but a life changer if someone wants to use getgoogleoff.me or disr.it for another purpose and keep chats separated.

I tend to agree. Alias on XMPP does not bring much in terms of features while being able to seperate use axes with essentially seperate accounts does look appealing indeed.

Alias sounds fine to me.
