Getting shot anywhere you go

[–] Flickerby@lemmy.zip 21 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Food. Shelter. Healthcare. In a lot of places water. Just staying in general is markedly more difficult.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Trust me, we worry about shelter and food and electricity

[–] FireTower@lemmy.world 8 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Have you seen Canadian house prices?

[–] Greg@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 hours ago

Canada has some of the least affordable cities in North America but it also has some of the most affordable cities. If you are able to move then Canada has some very affordable options. But I appreciate that the ability to move is a luxury that many folks don’t have because of circumstances like family commitments.

[–] Flickerby@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

No but in my neighborhood it's 3.5kUSD/month for a one bedroom studio

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Ay, you live in Boston too?

[–] Flickerby@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)
[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Ah yeah, of course not. Who would live in a hellscape where having an apartment to yourself is a fantasy?

[–] SonOfAntenora@lemmy.world 13 points 8 hours ago

I do believe the reputational damage caused by the orange one might be one of the things. That and obvious tariff issues. Hopefully it's temporary , or you have people who just don't care.

[–] ace_garp@lemmy.world 10 points 8 hours ago

The chance of a nationwide maple-syrup shortage.

Surprise medical bills; random shootings; a fascist dictator leading the country; the complete and entire erosion of the rule of law

a fascist dictator leading the country; the complete and entire erosion of the rule of law

It's more relevant in the states right now, but this is something we should all worry about all the time.

[–] Nikls94@lemmy.world 11 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

To clarify for anyone who missed it:

Trump made a law that states that the president of the US is above the law.

This means that, even after the next election, he could remain president, since the laws that prevent this don’t apply to him. He could also just straight up shoot one in the streets and wouldn’t be able to be punished.

[–] confuser@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Wait really lol? Idk how this could legally have happened? And why isnt this across the news (nobody is allowed to say some degree of "but that's what they want you to think") lol

Being stuck in a shitty job, because you now have a medical condition, and the insurance of the job you want refuses to cover you.

[–] Doorbook@lemmy.world 22 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

A friend in the US told me: I cannot work more hours because I need to keep my income at specific range to be able to qualify for provisional or federal medical insurance.

This is so fucked up.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 5 points 10 hours ago

Literally the poverty line

[–] darthelmet@lemmy.world 40 points 12 hours ago

I think we might need a book to answer that. A comment seems insufficient.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 17 points 12 hours ago

Having moved from one to the other

  • Health insurance (it's not perfect but it's something)
  • Random shootings (they still happen but are not as endemic)
  • Corn syrup in literally every food
  • Having clean streets (particularly in cities)

To me it lately sounds like Canadians do need to worry a bit about "freedom" being brought to them.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 4 points 11 hours ago

Yep, we're free to pay up and fall in line, or fuck off and die. That's the choice. Also for too many there's no choice, you get both.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago

Freedom costs a buck oh five

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 18 points 12 hours ago

Starting a war, forgetting your gun somewhere and only having your spare one to work with, making the payment on your medical bills, remembering if the McRib is back, worrying that the exploited people who did all the things you don't feel like doing will be deported, and forgetting to tell the President "thank you" every day as a tribute to their brilliant leadership.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 12 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Medical bills and insurance.

[–] dis_honestfamiliar@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 11 hours ago

Can confirm. You never know if the standard procedure will cost couple of hundred or thousands.

[–] j4k3@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

constantly threatened by a right wing party, who has used voter suppression to always win most of the time, and DEMS who are also DINOs , on the right but is elected as a "left" president, but votes with the gop on many things. which is why they dont immediately repeal things like tax cuts, or patriot act, or right now unlikely to repeal anything when palintir finishes all thier databases of individuals in the us. also no healthcare, because Ds would lose thier bargaining chip into getting elected in the future, so its just stringing voters along. also billionaires have significant sway us policy. when both parties are right wing, one is center right but the other is on far right, its very hard to make progress here.

always dealing with how white people behave around POC groups, if you're a pOC some caucasian groups will always give you some wierd vibes, like give you a nasty stare, or immediately try to quickly walk away. also dealing with reverse white flight.

Easy: destroying the world out of sheer stupidity and greed.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 11 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Having the most indecent & loudest loudmouths as their leaders.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

I know Carney's not even close to as bad as Trump but he literally just called for a "Zionist Palestine"

Also, have you ever heard of Doug and Rob Ford?

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 6 points 12 hours ago

Other countries have this problem. Well, now that I think of it, it's mostly just the UK. Wonder where the US got it from lol

[–] dastanktal@lemmy.ml 8 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Whether or not weed is legal in their state.

Whether or not the government is going to be shut down that year.

If you visit harbin China they will think you are Russian, which is pretty much a wash. The worst part is the Russians will think you are Russian too and try to get you to drink with them. Unless you regularly down pints of vodka do NOT go drinking with Russians.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 2 points 6 hours ago

Unless you regularly down pints of vodka do NOT go drinking with Russians.

LMAO especially the ones who want you to drink with them I guess!

[–] remotelove@lemmy.ca 6 points 11 hours ago

Yes. I was able to fake being Irish for a bit to a group of English folk. (It was just an alcohol induced joke at the time, s'all. They were either a few pints in or I did really well. Dunno.)

People are just people and there is probably a word or phrase for "gullible" in most languages.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 2 points 11 hours ago

With dentistry straight from the uncanny valley and inside voices that rival foghorns?

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 2 points 12 hours ago
