In a better world, I might hope for this to be the beginning of the end for social media and online ads. In this one, well…

My experience with my friends and family:

I left Facebook a long time ago and never looked back.

I'm having this discussion with friends. We created a new signal group but some refuse to install signal, because having another app is "too distracting", and using Meta is OK because we also all use Google/Apple products and some people are on instagram.

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 16 points 1 year ago

Just leave them behind if they can't be arsed.

I was the last of my immediate family on Facebook, and I only stuck around to keep in touch with a couple hobby groups. I decided to cut the cord once Zuck went mask-off, and honestly I haven't regretted it. The family group text is still chugging along fine, and most of the people I actually want to talk to are on other platforms at this point.

I don't blame anybody who feels like they have to keep Facebook to stay in touch with loved ones... but man, it feels good not to have that spammy time suck on my phone anymore.

Never bothered with the app to begin with, the mobile website works just fine.

[–] SlopppyEngineer@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The Facebook algorithm doesn't show posts from the people you follow only in homeopathic quantities anyway. The rest is junk.

I logged in a few months ago to deal with something with my Quest, and holy shit.

I didn't follow many people, but every post was some AI generated sexy-single-in-my-area nonsense trying to convince me that I need to call them right now for the hot sex, or something.

It was fucking bizarre and I'm utterly confused as to what in the hell is going on, since if they're showing me that shit, you know they're shoveling it at everyone too? Like, I cannot fathom why anyone would willingly put up with that shit for cat pictures or whtaever the hell boomers use it for.

Took me way to long to realise you mean the VR headset...

Hopefully some will still leave in time. I should have left reddit years before I did.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 6 points 1 year ago

Instagram and WhatsApp too! I am free from meta now.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

They need to check out Friendica to make it stick.

You’re looking back in this very comment

Green Day's When I Come Around starts playing

[–] thejml@lemm.ee 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

Now, can Facebook shut down to the Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of your life)”?

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What a coincidence, Trump's loyalty purge email was titled "A fork in the road" https://www.opm.gov/fork

God damn it these fucking techbro loligarchs and their dipshit nerd humor.

Hurr hurr we're making a fork of the US government code hurr durr.

What a bunch of juvenile fucking delinquents.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

I don't know. Haven't been playing that close enough attention. Wake Me Up When September Ends.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No. They only get "Want You Gone" from the Portal 2 soundtrack.

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Go make some new disaster

That's what I'm counting on

You're someone else's problem

Now I only want you gone

[–] takeda@lemm.ee 57 points 1 year ago

That doesn't matter, his current customers are governments and oligarchs who want people to have certain opinion.

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 37 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Other than myself I only know one other person who has quit Facebook over this, so I very much doubt that advertisers will stay away. It took a lot more for them to leave Twitter, even after Elon told them to fuck off and sued them for not advertising on his platform.

[–] thejml@lemm.ee 21 points 1 year ago

Everyone I know that would have left Facebook over this already left years ago during other scares/changes/security issues.

I dropped it cold Turkey about 9yrs ago and never looked back.

[–] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

I remember back when Elmo took over Twitter and advertisers could be shamed into quitting. But slowly they all crawled back. Hopefully it will stick this time.

[–] Computerchairgeneral@fedia.io 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't have much faith in advertisers starving Zuckerberg of cash. Unless there's an exodus of users from Facebook, Instagram, and whatever else Zuckerberg owns then there's not going to be any pressure on advertisers to abandon those sites.

[–] sighofannoyance@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Just one major advertising client leaving is devastating. Nobody wants their business's ad to appear next to nazi-content.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

Advertisers will go where people are. Unless people are leaving the Zuckerverse, the advertisers will just go along with it.

You don't need advertisers when you've got the garment in your pocket. Don't you worry that little deposit he made into the White House coffers won't let him plenty of sweet cash.

[–] tonytins@pawb.social 9 points 1 year ago

Who knew, these tech bros would drive consumers and advertisers together to fight a common enemy.

To paraphrase Mayor Quimby: if the winds of change are blowing, never let it be said that Mark Zuckerberg does not also blow.

Funny world when advertisers have better morals than some people.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 10 points 1 year ago

They just understand that Nazis are not good for business.

[–] rickdg@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Elmo has had a toxic influence in the modern world.

[–] julysfire@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Surprise Pikachu

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How rude am I allowed to be to my friends who have facebook accounts? Cause I want to ask them how different it is from Stromfront.

[–] Hominine@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Seems reasonable. Probably not that different to boot.

[–] sighofannoyance@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Damn who knew brandsafety would one day save democracy?
