Will work for the lifetime of the Deck.

Device overheats?

You’re using it wrong!

Yet still cheaper to remove - no matter how many Decks you have to do it to.

What do you think i am? Some sort of cs skin gambler

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 4 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Did that for a home server of mine after the CPU fan broke. Kept an eye on the temperature for a while and it works great. Now I only need to get rid of the PSU to make it really silent.

[–] DannyBoy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago

Removing the PSU would quiet things down. The PSU fan though, I had mine break on my computer awhile back and out of laziness and frugality left it for a few months and had no ill effects.

I soldered resistors into the fans on my old poweredge

Is the LCD one louder than the OLED?

[–] ekky@sopuli.xyz 32 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There was a supply shortage of fans during the launch of the LCD model. Valve solved this by shipping two types of fans until supply was restored. If you had one of the alternative fans, then your SD would have a pretty bad whine.

Though, Valve offered original replacement fans via. IFixIt soon after, so you could just buy the better fan and change it. I did.

[–] Pieisawesome@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

They should’ve replaced them for free…

In addition to what the other reply said, the OLED model has lower power usage for the SoC because it's a newer revision of the same chip, made with a newer process.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 16 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, the OLED model has a more efficient processor, thus producing less heat, thus the fan runs at a lower speed, this making less noise.

LCD is distractingy loud, OLED is very quiet.

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I had a LCD, and it was good, but the fan was super annoying and battery life was abysmal, and it even got a little warm. The fan was so loud it would drown out the sound of some games and was very distracting. I debated since launch about an OLED upgrade but didn't think it was worth it till this Christmas when I decided to upgrade.

Wow, this thing is so much better. Almost silent, battery lasts waaaay longer and the screen I never expected to be saw jaw dropping. My only regret is I waited so long to upgrade.

I'm still holding out with the LCD for the steam deck 2

[–] TheFeatureCreature@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

Finally, something to listen to while I huff the fumes.

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

I prefer to use a kazoo

[–] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 3 weeks ago

but then i can't smell it

[–] cRazi_man@lemm.ee 3 points 3 weeks ago

Or you could attach the top of a whoopee cushion over it.

OK now you're cooking. Would this actually play sweet tunes?

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago

If you like one loud shrill unchanging tune, sure.

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 1 points 3 weeks ago

OLED is still loud. Elden Ring ramps up the fans. Those copper heat sink mods do have a point

[–] histic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Tbh I put a monoblock with k5 and under volted my cpu and the fan barely even runs now

[–] xia@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

So digital bagpipes are somehow better?

[–] DasSkelett@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 weeks ago

Bagpipes are always better!
