Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

If this started happening to lots of CEOs, you’d suddenly see gun control laws have Republican support, just like magic.

[–] SeattleRain@lemmy.world 78 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Chappelle joked once that if black people want to see serious gun control in the US all they need to do is buy a gun themselves.

It's not really a joke, the pro gun Black Panthers are why the Northeast and California have stricter gun laws.

And that legislation was brought by none other than Ronald Reagan.

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm starting to think that this Reagan guy might actually have been a bit of a jerk

Behind the Bastards epidode. Their bit on Nancy is WILD if remotely true. https://youtu.be/RrY2V07sB78?si=rB3UjFsJI_5ZK1mP

Robert tends to do pretty great research and the stuff about Nancy wasn't exactly a closely guarded secret. Those two really were two shits in a bowl

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 59 points 1 year ago

If they were shooting up board rooms instead of classrooms we’d have gun control yesterday.

maybe it's the "oligarch fell from 10th floor window" USA version?

They also used "AI" to deny a bunch of claims. Fuck this guy and whoever replaces him. Insurance companies should be dismantled. They're a scourge on society.

What the shooter did = straight up murder.

What the victim did = sorta, kinda, mass murder, but also legal because the US is a broken country.

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago

Thousands and one deaths

[–] SGforce@lemmy.ca 76 points 1 year ago (2 children)

There's got to be like what, 100million suspects?

[–] SeattleRain@lemmy.world 46 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It might be easier to ask 'who didn't want this guy dead?'.

Mask, disappeared on a bicycle in the early morning hours? The likelihood of this remaining an unsolved murder is incredibly high unless the guy decides to announce why he did it

[–] SeattleRain@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

This guy knew what he was doing. Probably didn't carry a cell phone and I wouldn't be surprised if the silencer turns out to be homemade. Reminds me of the movie "Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai". Where the hitman did a bunch of practical things to keep from being traced.

[–] SeattleRain@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

You'll probably start seeing CEOs with heavy security details from here on out.

[–] SeattleRain@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

There was another story about a wealthy CEO being gunned down in a posh area of New York City. Everyone said it was an example of street crime being out of control but it turned out to be one of his wealthy business partners. Could be the same case here.

[–] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 year ago

I think the bullets were a preexisting medical condition.

NY Post is a right wing shitrag. I literally have it blocked at a network level it's such a fucking bad source.

The likelihood of this being a targeted attack is near zero and this is NY Post trying to get the wealth class scared that people are going to target them so they can justify a pretext for more law enforcement "protection" of "special" people like this guy.

They know they deserve to be targeted so they're working on massaging the media to promote the idea that they need protection before real targeting happens.

The first two outlets to report on this and say it was targeted were NY Post and fucking Bloomberg. Both right wing shitrags with vested interest in protecting the wealth class.

Here is a follow up from Reuters without claims of a targeted attack.

shooter had a suppressor

Well that's really polite in terms of noise. Maybe it was a Canadian hitman. Manners, you know.

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago

Your assumptions show your biases against random muggers. You should be more open-minded.

^Does this need an /s? I’m gonna put an /s, just in case^

[–] SeattleRain@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago (12 children)

Sure, but the police are saying it was targeted. And it's being reported all over. https://abc7news.com/shooting-man-shot-midtown-manhattan/15622426/

They may have added the "targeted" info afterwards. From that Reuters article you linked:

New York Times reported that police view the attack as targeted.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ok, what's the deal with this guy? Evil health corpo or good dude?
