I finished the Elden Ring DLC, and did cleanup afterwards because I missed a couple of mini dungeons. I definitely want to make a new character and go through again. Hope everyone has had a good weekend so far

You might have heard of this obscure indie gem, Celeste madeline-smug

It's cool and generally I like how it does the Mega Man thing of teaching through doing, but yo how do those little launcher orb guys work? I have to use them in high winds rn and they behave very inconsistently..

[-] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

the green bubbles? they should shoot you out in the direction you're holding consistently, though if you're not using D-pad it can be tough. they recharge your dash too.

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

Okay yeah but sometimes they launch me further? I find it really hard to get up on those high platforms in the wind thonk-cri

I am using an 8bitdo M30 fwiw, saturn pad

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

I think I'm just really bad at Celeste help kitty-cri

[-] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

it's a very challenging game!! are you hard stuck on a particular screen or just having trouble getting through that level?

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Fuk u I play castlevania for fun I'm not owned kitty-birthday-sad

The entire second half of the golden ridge level in chapter 4 was just, fuck wind gimmicks madeline-bruh I got it eventually cuz I'm BASED, but some of the moving platform puzzles pained me too.

[-] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

hehe knew you could do it:3 yeah anything involving level timings like the moving platforms or the red blobby guys is my least favourite in celeste. the wind is a pain too. keep us posted on your progress !

Star Fox 64! ๐ŸฆŠ๐ŸŒŒ

[-] SerLava@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

I recently played some Star Fox 2 for the SNES which only got released a few years ago. It's very interesting, similar to 64, and a lot of cool stuff in that game got cut when they went to the N64. They had 4 arwing variants to choose from and you could pick your wingman who each had one of the 4 variants

[-] c0smokram3r@midwest.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

Whooaaa! I never realized this! Going back to SF2 after this, thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

It was originally exclusive to those expensive mini SNES emulator consoles, but they eventually dropped it to NSO too. You can also uhhh acquire it very legally on very legal websites :)

[-] Babs@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago

I think I'm at the end of Shadow of the Erdtree. I'm now just exploring that late game forest area, and unlocked what might be the last legacy dungeon. Been avoiding spoilers somehow.

If my theories are right, this story is real fucked up.

I just wish it was possible to get the dlc weapons earlier. I'd love to start a vagabond run using the dueling shield (easy mode weapon for bosses btw), or bandit with the backhand blades.

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I think there are a few mods that give every item in the game + DLC to the first merchant at the Church of Elleh in the base game. Haven't tried them myself, though.

Still playing Dwarf Fortress. The Fort is up to 231 population. Attempting to deal with the Bat People has only angered them. Dozens of them have been killed, but all this has managed is summoning 168 of them to my top cavern level. One legendary axedwarf got stuck 3 Z-levels up a tower-cap somehow and got pincushioned. The expedition leader also got got. One dwarf, a 7 year old child who got traumatized in an earlier Bat Person attack and lost a lung, has been tantruming, killing two dwarves somehow, even though simply walking is enough to make her winded.

The fortress has been decreed a barony, and one of the original settlers, a 5x legendary miner was given the title. New dwellings and a tavern have been built near the third cavern layer to try to draw as many dwarves towards the magma-powered workshops as possible. Several forgotten beasts have arrived, but none pose any immediate threat.

[-] Comp4@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

Keep us posted. I havent played Dwarf Fortress since the steam release but I love reading about it.

Trepang^2^.

The only game that dares to ask; what if you could be doing non-stop dropkicks in an FPS and have it work?

[-] nemmybun@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago

I decided the next game I want to make that is within my capabilities (hopefully) is a shump so I've been playing a bunch of shumps to get inspired for my own project. Of all the games I tried out so far (and there's been a lot), I found Mushihimesama, Radiant Silvergun, and Zeroranger the most interesting ones to invest more time in.

[-] Comp4@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

Wowowo, you are that gamedev! I'm following your progress with interest. I'm interested in gamedev myself but a complete beginner and haven't even decided on an engine or anything. I just decided I want to get into hobby gamedev before I grow old and bitter.

[-] nemmybun@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

That was my first project beyond very simple tutorial stuff so I'm honestly not too much further than complete beginner myself! I think you should just go for it! Engine-wise I chose Godot because it's open-source and it's pretty simple to get started for a hobbyist like me but Unity is also a good choice due to the sheer amount of support and resources available. I wouldn't stress engine choice too much since many concepts will crossover so you're not like starting from scratch if you decide to change.

I'm happy to help answer questions or give pointers or whatever to get you started if you ever want

[-] Comp4@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

My hope would be to make a simple turn-based 4X game one day. Nothing with tons of features. I'm aware that strategy games might be a challenge, but I want to make games I myself would play and enjoy, and that I want to see more of in the world.

I 100% want to make something more ambitious, strategy game-wise, one day, but that's many years into the future. I'd like to cut my teeth on multiple smaller projects first.

I guess my plan is to use the experience I gain from earlier projects in more ambitious ones down the line. So, it would probably help to stick with one engine that is decent at what I plan to do. Then again, I'm basically at step 0.

Also, no worries, this is probably going to be a purely long-term hobby project for me unless I somehow strike gold.

de-endurance

Oh, you know what I've been playing.

[-] Chronicon@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

trying to decide between cleaning my apartment (it needs it), going shopping for groceries/essentials (I need them), and playing Disco Elysium

I basically never play video games so this is actually a tough choice

[-] radiofreeval@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

Deep rock galactic. My first mission was with some friends in a haz 4 at 95% intoxication. I love this have.

[-] Vingst@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Shogun 2 Total War, just hit realm divide but I've got the whole east side of the map controlled and my monks are sowing chaos inciting Buddhist revolts in enemy territory. Oh and I captured the Black Ship so now I've got a big Portuguese galleon loaded with cannon and musket.

[-] SerLava@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

I'm jell. I started playing that again recently as well, I am on my second try and I'm doing a lot better but it's getting precarious. I really wanted to capture one end so I could defend at 2 places instead of 5, but the diplomatic situation just didn't allow for that and now I'm paying the price

[-] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

I have started Pillars of Eternity II and I'm not sure about it. I heard it had good turn based combat but it feels like the base combat mechanics are somewhere around rolemaster mixed with D&D 4e, which have then been crammed into a simplified 5e action economy. The lore's fine, but none of it has particularly grabbed me, so I'm probably going to end up ignoring most of the side content even if I do decide to finish the main quest.

[-] Satanic_Mills@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

The PoE system is Sawyer's attempt to make RTwP actually work; the turn-based mode was a later addition in response to market trends and is fine but not the way the game is intended to be played.

Have you made it to Neketaka and met all the factions? The story didn't pick up for me until then.

[-] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

I guess I'll switch to RTwP then, see if I like it any more than I have in the past. I've just arrived on Neketaka and started meeting factions, so I so far hate the Principi (aristocrats), Valians (big oil), and Royal Deadfire Company (br*tish). Still need to meet the Neketaka part of the Huana, but unless they turn out to be deeply problematic on some way I'm pretty sure I'm just going to side with them on everything.

[-] Satanic_Mills@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I still don't think RTwP is a great system but PoE probably has the best implementation of it I've seen.

I also sided with the Huana on everything, but I enjoyed playing a game that actually takes colonialism reasonably seriously, along with all the self-justifying rhetoric that comes with the different flavours of colonisers.

Edit: for an epilogue read the faction choice arguments on reddit to see how far we've not come.

After a week break hopped back into Darkest Dungeon II. While other games were calling to me, this was the only game to break through the ADHD.

[-] magi@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Good luck, I loved the first and hoping the 2nd game is as good

[-] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

I'd say the first is slightly better, but both are good in their own ways.

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Still working through Shadow of the Erdtree. Figuring out a route to some of those weird edges of the map's been tough.

Picked up Slay the Princess, Times & Galaxy and a few other indies on steam sale. StP has been fun - finished two playthrough and might wait until the big content patch coming soon to play more.

[-] Comp4@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Slay the Princess is a fun experience, but I feel it's best to say nothing about its content. I would really recommend it to some folks, but it's best to go into it blind (unless someone wants explicit content warnings).

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, I had a bit of spoilers from a Remap Radio interview with the developers, but went in otherwise without much knowledge. Even recommending it on the basis of "if you like x, you will probably like StP" feels like a spoiler lol.

I'll at least say that I'm not huge on VNs with romance elements and I liked the game a lot.

[-] Comp4@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

I'm gonna play Interstellar Space: Genesis tonight, which is a Master of Orion 2-inspired space 4X game by a small indie team. The art style is not exactly great, but I heard decent praise from some people. I dabbled in it in the past, but I wanted to give it 1-2 full, proper games to form a more coherent opinion on it.

[-] Mindfury@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

i just caved and bought monster hunter world

i'm gonna take a sick day today and play it lol

[-] gsf@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

I like that I can jump into mhw for like 20 minutes and that's enough for now

[-] SerLava@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Shogun tv show gave me the itch for Shogun 2 Total War

The Finals 5v5 with the lads for the last few weeks. It really slaps especially when you bring a team

Thronefall. They have been updating it a lot and it's so so good. Can be very hard if you want it to be. It's a sort of tower defense/RTS hybrid with a player character who can run around on a horse and help fight. Game is like 10 bucks or something I think. It's cheap

Fallout 76 should have resulted in prosecutions but it's actually really good now, only took 6 years. Still not good solo

[-] let_me_tank_her@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Still playing Trails into Reverie.

Got the urge to play some Ace Combat 7 again this week and fuck around in that again. Really fun time. MiG-29 my beloved.

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Finished Shadow of the Erdtree, then went around and picked up the last skibidi fragments and revered spirit ashes I was missing. I'm planning to just look up all the side stuff I missed and go through them, but I'm kind of feeling burnt out.

Also playing more Vampire Survivors knockoffs. Soulstone Survivors is fine, but I can't really tell what makes a build work vs not. Death Must Die, meanwhile, is ripping off Hades' aesthetic so hard it's almost funny. Honestly not a great choice, as the genre is pretty widely acknowledged as a "second-screen game", meaning I'm not going to hear the VAs anyway.

Dawntrail!

Loving Viper & Picto. Didn't really progress the MSQ so much as its boring me to tears but I love the scenery and music :D

[-] magi@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Working my way through Final Fantasy II on NES

[-] Canis_latrans@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Slay the Spire- All of 2024 I've been playing solely with one character for a month and seeing how many A20 heartkills I get. I'm not a high level player or anything, I average like 1.5 wins per month, but I enjoy playing the game with some limits/structure.

Anyways I wrapped up June with a Defect win, with a deck that did most of its damage with dark orbs, which is unusual. Looking forward to July and good ole Ironclad.

Other things, I've been wanting to play Baldur's Gate 3 so bad I am considering buying a PS5. Excited about the library of games I've never played about to open up.
