American problem, everyone merges traffic just fine over here. Who gives a fuck about letting 3 meters of car in? Literally does not affect journey time whatsoever.
It truly is infuriating here in the US once there’s heavy traffic, though. Instead of just going to the end of the lane and zipper merging, everyone seems to have a different opinion about how far from the end of the lane it’s "polite" to merge from. So some people come to a full stop in the middle of the vanishing lane 800 yards before the merge, refusing to get closer, and others in the through lane refuse to let anyone in closer than 300 yards from the merge. You end up with the vanishing lane leapfrogging and merging at random places while the through lane is completely stopped past 1000 yards from the merge.
You could make some sort of game theory argument, except it’s literally best for everyone to just go as far as you can! And it’s on the driving test!
But this is mostly people being too considerate to those in front (and delaying those behind, who are out of sight). Drawing the conclusion from the op is absurd.
i've been in a zipper merge once and it seemed efficient
i don't know how many times i've shouted at my own windshield "STOP BEING POLITE, BE PREDICTABLE!"
It’s not really a problem here either tbh, like sure there’s the occasional dickhead but for the most part merging happens just fine
its also a regional issue. some places in the US, driver culture is a bit more considerate. maybe not as friendly/courteous as some places I've been overseas, but not every where is like Phoenix or Orlando where two out of every three drivers hates you personally and wants you to die for existing on the roads that were built by God for them only.
