World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

should've cut it 4 years ago if he wanted to be believable.
This is good info. Thank you for sharing.
PT is almost always in a coalition with PSOL, and often more fringe parties like PCdB, UP, are willing to support them with the little representation they have, there is also the "center left" (highly questionable to be willing to call the that honestly) parties that sometimes are willing to, the biggest being PSDB, sometimes PT has to give in some controversial concessions to get support, like for example with a concession to get some of their representitives to support the "Lei Felca" which is a highyl controversion law that passed that can only described as a parallel to the UK's Online Safety Act, although the former has not been enforved so far at all (AFAIK) even though it has been in effect for months, but that hasn't stopped platforms from already trying to comply with its impossible and insane text
Their current coalition has exactly half of the senators - so one dissident away from not being able to pass a law - and includes two center-right parties (MDB and PSD) and is in the minority in the Chamber of Deputies.
You know that the political process needs a lot of patience and time if you actually want to achieve something? This is not a "new development". The bill itself was introduced in April, and designing it also took some time. He also had his hands full to fix the more egregious bullshit put into place like the 20 years block on increasing health and education expenses in a growing country and the laws that allowed the wholesale firing of many employees and rehiring them as freelancers without having to pay severance, or the freeze on minimum wage that lasted 6 years without any mechanism to take inflation into account. Reducing the work week is actually one of the last promises he gave during the last elections.

Maybe that's the case in Brazil, but here in the US, that is patently false.
If the US had anything resembling a real democracy i would concur, but you don't have that. The two-party system with first-past-the-post really fucks the US populations ability to get change enacted. Lula's party does not have a 2/3 majority, it has to seek partners for the laws they want to enact, and that takes time.
If nothing else, Donald has demonstrated that change really takes no time at all. A president just has to give enough of a damn to do it. The motherfucker literally made his second inauguration a ritual in demonstrating a commitment to change. (Shitty changes, but still change.)
And yes, our system has been well-engineered from the start to make sure the entire governing apparatus favors the rich and powerful. I don't think that is ever going to change.
This.
I'm so tired of politicians pretending to give a shit about the poor and middle class, but only during campaign season.
As i answered you above, Lula's party has to seek partners to get 2/3 majorities to enact laws. He can't just do a Trump and do whatever they want - and that is good and healthy! (Lula himself also has been involved in Unions for decades - i am very sure that he actually cares).
They already made sure that minimum wage has climbed around 30% over the last years and that the Health and Education System actually can get more money (there really was a law prohibiting increased spending in the health sector for 2 decades - absolutely bonkers). Still, there's a lot to do, but for a party that has to actually convince other parties to vote with them they are doing a pretty good job.
Thank you for expanding on your earlier point. I appreciate the info.
I think a general sense of cynicism on the topic is appropriate too.
