A glitch in the EA Sports FC 27 video game, which saw some women’s players appear in their underwear, will be resolved by a title update, the game’s manufacturer Electronic Arts has announced.

EAFC27, part of the world’s largest football video game franchise, was released in the United States and worldwide on September 25. Users with early access to the game, which went live on September 18, reported that some women’s character models would, in certain cut-scenes, appear without their kits, wearing only black underwear.

'Glitch'? Why would that even be a model in the game in the first place?

“All base character models in our games include default undergarments as a standard technical failsafe. In rare instances where an asset-loading error occurs, this failsafe ensures character models remain appropriately covered.”

:cough:bullshit!:cough:

Edit: thanks for the replies, folks. I guess my lack of knowledge about game development is showing. :)

The fact character textures include some basic painted-on underwear so no accidental slip happens is believable. In fact historically some games have been in hot waters because their textures included (usually not very detailed) naughty bits. Even if they didn't show anywhere in game.

The fact a game can release in a state in which it fails at loading character's clothing in normal gameplay, and still run like nothing's wrong, is a joke.

Ah, Beyond: Two Souls shower scene. Never saw it myself, but yeah, pervs will perv.

Special case. This game, David Cage and Quantic Dreams in general really deserve all the shit they got and more for making that scene despite the model actor for the character having a no-nude scene policy.

Compare that to Oblivion getting stupid flak for a texture with blurry tits on generic toons, that can't even appear in game.

Damn, the actor is Elliot page too... The sexualization of trans people just adds another layer of creepiness to it.

False. The game came out in 2013. Page came out as trans in 2020. They were not sexualising a trans person.

Granted, it's proper to say that a trans person was always trans. We don't use his deadname to refer to his earlier work, nor do we use the gender identity assigned at birth. We say Elliot Page played a female character, and we can specify he is a trans man, but it's not strictly necessary. While technically the trans community would say "he was always trans," he didn't make it known until 2020.

Also, the shower scene did not contain nudity that members of the public could access. I read up on the scene. Someone with a PS3 dev kit was able to use custom camera angles enabled by the dev kit that a publicly available PS3 would not be able to do. So they really weren't sexualising Page at all.

Not sure he had already publicly said he was trans at the time.

So the extra layer might be in retrospect, but no matter what there was plenty of creepiness already.

I remember Watch Dogs 2 at launch....hooker models had a bush and all

Honestly, I'm more upset about the opposite, as seen in Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk is supposed to be about absolutely customisation and doing whatever you like to your character.

Instead, we got a super weak customisation engine (seriously, Starfield had more character customisation than CP2077...), and a grand total of SEVEN options for genitals... which were completely useless because NOWHERE INGAME COULD YOU SEE IT. They gave you an option to pick a dick (and not even a cyberdong or some customisation, hell, throw in some piercings or tattoos ffs), all for nothing. Even if you went fully naked, the game threw some underwear on you and nobody even noticed it. How am I to become the cyberdong streaker of Night City like this? how am I to beat off Arasaka security with an erection and my trusty gun? How am I to teabag Saburo Arasaka's dead body? Can't even fucking piss in the ocean.

Nah this has precedent. When horizon came out there were people that figured out if you went into photo mode and adjusted the angle juuuuust right the camera would clip through aloys clothes layer and you could see her boobs

The wild part was that the character model had fully modeled nipples. Like they bothered to model that when the clothing in that game is all heavy coats and shit that are like 4” thick. You would think they would’ve gone with the Barbie style

They patched it out once people kept posting pictures of her boobs online

I'd assume they kept the option open for topless scenes. Those are good for marketing. However they also affect the age restriction, so it's a trade-off.

I'd also assume that they used some default female model and modified it to create the character. And I'd assume that such models usually come with parts below clothing as well, in case some game wants to show those parts.

The issue is that Elliot Page had (likely still has) a no-nudity clause and they used him to model the character. They could have chosen to deal with an actor who did not have a no-nudity clause, but they wanted Page's name in the credits. (To avoid confusion, Elliot Page is transgender. He appeared in this game with his previous, feminine name. Doesn't change anything, but it might read as confusing that I am using male pronouns.)

[–] ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That was beyond two souls, a much older game but a somewhat similar situation. Page’s model goes through a shower scene and with a modded console you could run cheats that let you change the camera angle

Oof. I remember reading about it last week and got the names confused. You're right.

Aloy's physical scan model was Hannah Hoekstra, and her voice and mocap was Ashly Burch, according to the wiki.

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 2 points 3 days ago

Uhm, Aloy wasn't designed after Elliot Page, either pre- or post-transition. Them having a no-nudity policy applies to THEIR model, not every model in-game.

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 3 points 3 days ago

Honestly, game asset designers can go a bit overboard. If the job is "create the base model for this character, clothes will be added as separate model/texture as it needs to be swappable", they'll do exactly that - a nude model with full details because who knows when we'll need it.

[–] jsnfwlr@lemmy.ml 10 points 3 days ago

To allow for changes in uniform due to mid-season trades? "Strange" that it only happens with the female players though ...

[–] klankin@piefed.ca 4 points 3 days ago

Probably cause they're stock metahumans from Epic

“Fully Modeled”
