I've always just blamed it on insomnia, but I wonder if this is part of the root cause.

That and 24 hours just doesn't seem like enough time to accommodate our circadian rhythm... not as in we're too busy to squeeze it all in, but like being conscious for long enough to actually be tired enough to sleep soundly, then do that for a full 8 hours, would take like 32 hours total. Being that we're stuck in a 24 hour cycle, sleep is the easier chunk to sacrifice.

...or mandatory chunk to sacrifice if your insomnia is as bad as mine...

WTB some magic thruster to face against the Earth's rotation, and slow that bitch down by about 25%.

I was describing this exact thing to a friend a few weeks ago. My sleep cycle is trying to naturally push forward several hours every day because I've got too much conscious energy for a typical 16/8. 8 hours is a nice amount if sleep, but I need it on a 22/8 cycle instead.

I felt like a crazy person describing it, but now I feel less alone. Thank you stranger.

I think it's actually pretty common, just not commonly discussed. I suspect people who are "night owls" and "ugh, not a morning person" are pretty much all dealing with this.

I wonder if any sleep clinic/study folks have looked into this... it'd be a hard hypothesis to test... maybe like the Navy could run an experiment on one of its submarines - iirc they run on a 24 hour operations cycle, but all the lighting is synthetic. Adjusting that and the meal schedule /etc could put them in a unique position to really find the optimal wake-sleep duration and ratio.

/shrug.

Great news! Our current rocket technology uses the earth's rotation for some "free" extra energy at launch, which is why they all launch in the direction of the rotation. While impossible to perceive, this is already technically slowing down the earth's rotation and making days ever so slightly longer.
