I don't have any pets, but I have never heard of a cat going out of its way to maul a stranger. I can't say the same for dogs. So I prefer cats strictly on the basis that they're less likely to negatively impact my life.
feral/abused cats can and will attack you without warning just like a wild/feral/abused dog can, end the double standards!!!
Where is this? Most strays I see actively run or hide. They will come out if they're starving.

Once had a barbecue next the the edge of the jungle. A very feral large cat decided to show who was boss. Luckily I had plenty of food :) did not want to find out what would have happen if I hadn't thrown it half a chicken
