Because Republicans hate education. Most of the maga crowd will cheer this as a way to get back at the "wokes", or "intellectual elites".

There's a reason that authoritarian revolutions typically have a "kill all the eggheads" phase. That type of arrogance isn't compatible with someone saying, "Hey guys, I've studied this my whole life and what you're saying is incorrect.". Fragile egos can't deal with the idea that they might be wrong about something, so they just hulk smash anything that might cause cognitive dissonance and move on.
