It doesn't say that. You are right. What it says is that the dangers come from people overtaking and assuming that someone is faster. It has nothing to do with ego and only with adhering to the law. I don't want a speeding ticket because someone else what's to be faster.
Everyone who overtakes me when I am at the speed limit is an idiot in my eye. People could just follow the law. Then the average speed would be the legal speed limit.
Would you rather be lawful, or improve everyone's chances of surviving the trip?
Lawful. They made it dangerous, not me. What I want is everyone to be lawful. I don't want to break the law for the faults of other people. I will not pay for other people's disregard for the rules. I will avoid crashes in what ever way is left for me.
