Most people have really bad night vision. They still drive like they are in daylight even on moonless nights. Even a small car has big stopping distances when travelling at speed. No one has it drilled into them enough, at a certain speed, your stopping distance is longer than the range of your headlights, and it's not as fast as most people seem to believe.

Over-driving your headlights at 5AM. Years ago, my roommate's brother died by crashing his car into the side of a train that way.
