This week, I ran 'man mount' while learning about bind mounts.

[–] lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mean there are audiovisual teaching aids for how to mount men all over the Internet. Or so I'm told

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 2 points 3 days ago

In this context I really hope you mean aides.

[–] LostCarcosan@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

I giggle every time I see 'man touch'

[–] Quibblekrust@thelemmy.club 1 points 3 days ago

I just watched that movie.

Also, in Italian "sudo" means "I sweat".

sudo nano

means "I sweat, dwarf"

I like how developers are not shying away from possibility of them having foot fetish (foot terminal, gnome logo being a foot)

[–] vanillama@programming.dev 42 points 3 days ago (2 children)

The foot is actually symbolic for the devs stepping all over you with their opinionated design and no choices

[–] idunnololz@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Oh. Plenty, they just don't fuck with 'consent'.

[–] neutronbumblebee@mander.xyz 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I avoided Gnome for exactly that reason for years but the shell extensions for gnome have improved a lot and it's pretty flexible now. If you don't mind depending on the addin authors maintaining your favorites.Dash to panel or dock is virtually a whole different UI.

Ngl, for me both GNOME and GTK+ suck, their governance, design principles, development principles, and both user-facing and dev-facing cultures, are authoritarian and really toxic. Look at, for example, the Mutter controversy, or the controversy woth GTK4 and the subsequent creation of both MATE and Cinnamon, or the drama with Zrythm (which author I do personally support) and FalkTX, etc.

[–] lastweakness@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I honestly find it odd that anyone brings up "no choices" and "lack of customisation" as a point against GNOME at all... Nothing in any desktop environment comes close to the versatility of GNOME extensions.

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago

Cinnamon ? albeit its a Gnome mutt anyway

[–] shrugs@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago

finally someone says it.

the extensions might not be core utilities of gnome and break on an update, but they allow for customization that even kde doesn't provide yet everyone is saying gnome has a "lack of customization"

[–] Kangae_Hishiryo@scribe.disroot.org 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] lastweakness@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, KDE included. I don't think you understand the level of flexibility that being able to monkey-patch the GNOME shell provides. And I say that as someone who loves both KDE and GNOME for different reasons.

[–] Kangae_Hishiryo@scribe.disroot.org -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Honestly, I personally feel sorry (with every intention to offend) that you and others like you settle for and defend tooth and nail a half-baked solution, glued together with saliva and that breaks every time a core GNOME developer decides on it like monkey-patching over a shitty API. Not to mention the fact that KDE also allows it, and I say this as a KDE user, for the deepest part of its extensibility and scriptability, but without breaking it just because it looked ugly, and also allows other types of extensions, such as compiled dynamic libraries, or Plasmoids and components.

[–] lastweakness@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, you can say anything you want. Just doesn't change reality. GNOME devs do a lot these days to prevent updates from breaking extensions.

KDE also simply doesn't allow everything GNOME allows. I love KDE and I have past contributions to KDE as well. But pretending they're on the same level of customizability is delusional. It's not a helpful or meaningful statement to make, a statement born out of pure ignorance. Plus, you dragged KDE into this, not me. Not everything needs to be a fking desktop war for no fking reason.

[–] Kangae_Hishiryo@scribe.disroot.org -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm not making this a desktop war... Just mentioned it because everybody was saying something FALSE, because what you say about GNOME and KDE it's not true. I'm not ignorant, I have years in Linux too, and the fact that you make that ad hominem attack says really much about you. I'll cut it here because I don't have time nor energy to follow up, just wanna say everyone here that GNOME isn't that good.

[–] lastweakness@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago

I'm not the one who started a sentence with "with every intention to offend"... But sure. Also, you might want to look into what "ad hominem" means.

just wanna say everyone here that GNOME isn't that good.

Except we weren't talking or asking about how much better KDE is for you. I genuinely don't care since I already love both desktops. Unlike you, I'm not here to shit on one or the other.

We were discussing the flexibility offered by GNOME's extensions, which you, with your limited understanding, declared to be something that KDE can match, when that's just plain untrue just by virtue of how extensions work. You also implied that GNOME core devs are careless about extensions, which they are not. It's just how GNOME extensions work. It's a tradeoff for the flexibility, one they've tried their best for years to mitigate including offering porting guides. You can take offense to being told you're ignorant about all of this. But once again, that doesn't change how reality works.

That all said, I agree that I don't have the time or energy for this either. But as a software engineer, I really wish people wouldn't bring in their "opinions" when facts about a piece of software are being discussed... Anyway, i won't be replying here anymore, so bye

Man, I remember laughing like a school boy when I first heard of the "finger" util in college, lol.

Also finger \! && exit

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 3 days ago

Also there's Rufus

[–] Kangae_Hishiryo@scribe.disroot.org 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bro literal said "No bitches?" 😭😭😭😭

[–] sundray@lemmus.org -5 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Ugh, "gimp"? Seriously?

And the name isn't great either.

[–] Wiz@midwest.social 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

You're right. And it would be so simple to just drop the G and make it Image Manipulation Program. They could even use the same impish logo!

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 3 points 3 days ago

Good way to get Stallmwn to kill you

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They could, but they never will though. Chiefly because someone asked them to and, after stamping their feet like Veruca Salt, the devs have resolved to never ever stop pouting about it.

[–] Wiz@midwest.social 1 points 2 days ago

Someone could fork it, with just a different name. 😆

[–] OozingPositron@feddit.cl 5 points 3 days ago

Green is my pepper.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 3 points 3 days ago

GNU Image Manipulation Program or GIMP
