1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.

I just perused some of my facebook groups, and in the local groups I am part of, I found lots of recent posts organizing activities and advertising local gatherings. For my specific interests, I found people wanting new climbing partners, organizing canyoneering trips, discussing cycling advocacy, advertising local musicians playing, and boosting a local town's annual festival. I found these things by looking through a few random groups I subscribed to a while ago over the course of about 30s. So if you are saying that Facebook is garbage because no one is there open to making connections, then at least in my area you are objectively wrong.
If you are saying something about how Facebook is an evil corporation and you don't want to participate on some kind of ideological grounds, then I will refer to my recommendation in my previous comment: I strongly suggest that you get over it. Facebook has over 1 billion users, and your participation or lack thereof will have no impact on their bottom line. If you hate them, then you can advocate for the government to ban Zuck from getting invited to fun parties and work on an open source alternative. But it your goal is to get a job or make friends right now, then avoiding facebook or any other privately owned social media platform is simply counterproductive. Facebook and its ilk are where people are - so if your goal is to meet people, then you should be there.
It isn't my intention to insult you, but to plainly show you your blind spots. If you were to ask "how do I climb Mt Everest? I was told I need to train cardio, because I get out of breath going up a flight of stairs. Btw, I refuse to walk or run," then it would be reasonable to point out that you have a serious problem in trying to achieve your goal, and not walking or running will be a major issue in getting where you want to be.
Similarly, the way you framed your question implies some serious blind spots. Being recommended networking, then turning around and asking for an open source LinkedIn because you have no friends brings up some immediate questions:
Similar to the Everest climber who doesn't want to walk or run, it seems obvious to me that you need to take a step back and look at the big picture of what the source of your problems is. So, I attempted to lay out a set of common problems that are possible to apply, along with their solutions. If I could have framed it more nicely, then, well, sorry. But you should strongly consider if you are simply offended because I told you that you should start walking and running more if you want to climb Everest.
I will absolutely not share this with Lemmy, lest it become infested with Lemmings.
