I think they tried to make a pun (racing = racist) but it was terrible and everybody hated it.

Or they misread it, that is also possible.

I've been noticing that a lot recently; people keep deflecting discussions of racism into discussing races.

It allows people who want to smokescreen for racists to avoid leaving solid evidence they themselves are racist. It's essentially an advanced dogwhistle.
