I see how it could be uncomfortable. From one internet stranger to another, I hope you know it’s appreciated. That kind of empathy already goes a long way. It might not come out that way but I see it from here.

Some real advice for situations where you’re not quite sure how to address the ethnicity topic: you could just ask if they grew up in . If they say no, they might tell you where they grew up. If not, let it pass. Not everyone wants to talk about where they grew up. 1st generation+ Asians can be all over the place on comfort with their identity.

Also, if the vibes aren’t there, they might just not want to talk. That’s fine too.

They’re about even. Offline, people can obviously tell I’m Asian so it doesn’t make much sense to say “I’m Asian”. On the internet, I prefer a certain level of anonymity so I just go with Asian.

It’s super diverse in my city. So identifying with my ethnicity is generally an easy way to connect with others. They don’t even have to share my ethnicity. People love to ice break on ethnicity and I don’t mind that as long as they’re not trying to be weird about it.

I am Asian. There are Japanese restaurants in my city run by white people and I don’t consider it cultural appropriation. Cultural acceptability is a wide spectrum.

Appreciate this very thoughtful mod response. It’s easy to get too wrapped up on yes/no answers when reality is far more fuzzy and complicated than that.

As an AAPI, I didn’t see anything more to this than a funny little nod to the people who actually prepare ethnic cuisines in countries not of their origin.

The drama with PieFed this month was exhausting. Sorry you had to deal with that @Demigodrick@lemmy.zip. As always, appreciate the updates!

Hope a warm summer is kicking in nicely for ya!

Thank you for sharing names. Easy blocks and reports. The irony was clearly lost with this guy and his concept of “compassion”.

I’m very much in favor of naming and shaming. I think the average person can figure out that more than one mysogynistic idiot exists. And it would be a great public service to know who to block.

C’mon lemmy.zip lurkers! Say something nice! We could’ve gone 4 for 4!

Side question, are the typos intentional?

Dug up an old RPI 3 for the sole purpose of running a bulletproof sandbox for Claude Code. At 1 gb of RAM it’s a little slow but quite tolerable for running —dangerously-skip-permissions and one shot prompts.

Network isolated, Tailscale ACLs in, sudoless user created, and service account tokens setup with minimal permissions to GitHub. It should function almost exactly like Claude code remote. Excited to start testing it.

All I’m getting from the news are food aid deliveries and more blockade news. Nothing on the ground.

What are every day Cubans going through right now? Does anyone know?

Reddit wants me to believe that Pedigree and other mainstream WSAVA compliant brands are the only possible foods to feed your dog.

All other foods will kill your dog. Raw will kill your dog. Homemade will kill your dog.

My shiba’s been on dehydrated turkey barley for 5 years and in the prime of her health. The problem is that the company that makes her food suddenly shut down and she refuses to eat kibble.

Anyone have any recommendations for non-kibble dog food for a picky dog?

I installed this app on my previous phone a long time ago probably from some privacy Reddit thread and never touched it again. I have it on my new phone after transferring data over and it looks like it still works exactly the same way.

Any thoughts from people more informed about privacy than I am? Is it a security risk? I am giving up a ton of access to it.

Removed the boiler from my Gaggia Classic and it was a humbling experience to learn just how much scale can build up even on RO water.

Ultimately wasn’t able to get the boiler looking squeaky even after 2 hours of sitting in descale solution. Is that probably fine? I just rinsed and brushed it until I didn’t see any more visible scale flakes coming off. Flow is back to normal as far as I can tell.

I have an old Alienware r8 and several 2-4 TB HDDs gathering dust in a closet. The Alienware actually runs remarkably quiet and it occurred to me I could turn it into a DIY NAS.

I’m not entirely sure where to start though. Some immediate questions:

  • What’s a good NAS OS to install?
  • Any fun things I can do besides plex transcoding with a 1080 GPU?
  • Would it make sense to run a Pixelfed/Mastodon server off this guy?
  • Can I run a RAID on it without buying a separate HDD bay?

Background:

I already have a Synology NAS running Plex. It transcodes 1080p fine which is really all I need it for.

Other than a Plex port forward, I have zero experience putting services out on the public web (but would like to learn!).

Started up season 2 of Avatar The Last Airbender and it occurred to me that I never skip the intro sequences for any episode of this show. It’s just so good.

What other show intros can you not skip?

I thought it was the cologne they spray at the store, but even clothes I have delivered from a distribution center also have a smell that is very discernibly NOT Tide detergent.

How?? What are they washing these clothes with to make them smell like that??

How it works (lemmy.zip)

  1. Post a wish, like for a genie (e.g. "I wish for a million dollars")
  2. People comment with ways it can backfire. (e.g. "Great! Here's 2700 Zimbabwean dollars.")
  3. Profit!

I understand that weather on TV can’t be hyperlocally accurate. But a weather app on my phone has my exact GPS coordinates. Why can’t it tell me exactly when a rain cloud will be passing over my location?

It’s gotten to the point where I just use precipitation maps to figure out my rain chances for the day.

The hourly forecast is mostly useless because it’s not a chance % but a % of the area that will be raining.
