If it makes the Germans feel any better, Polish sandwiches are equally sad.
That's why baguettes / barras de pan are objectively superior - you simply can't make a sad looking sandwich with them the way you can with a slice of bread :D
And it still tastes better than the paper bread on the left.

I got laughed at one time at breakfast in Germany trying to make a sandwich. Little did I know...
IDK man I remember some good ones from the last time I was in Germany

In Norway, we'd remove the top slice of bread. And as long as the bread is good you don't need more than a little cheese or meat as garnish.
