Last breath? It’s the Balrog whip coming up and snatching Gandalf off the bridge in Khazad-dûm. They’re taking everything they can down with them and much of it is completely irreparable. It will never return. The rest will take decades to repair, assuming the damage hasn’t altered our government so badly that we’ll become Russia 2.0 with nothing but one shitty authoritarian after another treating the country like their own fiefdom to be exploited among oligarchs.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

We can work to improve the system over years of working together. We can still fix things, tho the people murdered by ICE in detention camps won't ever come back.

The only way that‘s going to happen is to get rid of the vast majority of our politicians. The republicans are fine being fascists, the dems are fine with losing to the fascists as long as they get reelected.

[–] bagsy@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've been saying it since trump 2 took office, eventually young, energetic, passionate leaders are going to emerge in huge numbers. We are starting to see that, and I think its going to keep growing. Someone is going to emerge that enrages maga so thoroughly, and generates so many views, that the media follow them around like they do to the orange shithead.

[–] amgine@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Problem is, the media is owned by friends or supporters of orange shithead so they’re biased towards him.

[–] isleepinahammock@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That matters less and less as time goes on. People aren't really getting much news from traditional media anymore. They've made themselves irrelevant.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Who owns the ISPs? The internet is becoming more corporate every day, while surveillance capacities have exploded.

Also, much non-traditional media is often just straight-up useless. Perhaps a little better than corporate media, but with a strong bias to a particular cause.

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I really like The Drea Dossier. Last Week Tonight. Benn Jordan (flashbulb). Zeteo with Mehdi Hasan, and a few others who I can’t recall now.

Yeah thats you, 99% of people get their news from fox and nyt instagram

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Where are they getting it from now?

Moving more and more towards streamers, podcasters, etc.

The problem is people follow media like sheep, like people just love sharing nyt articles like it proves something and then i comment nyt is corporate dogshit "well it's tje paper of record blah blah blah" yeah the record that billionaires want you to believe so you keep working for less money every year

[–] Pronell@lemmy.world 95 points 3 days ago

Since headlines can't identify individuals anymore for some reason...

"Marshan Camese, who goes by Nola tha Progressive on TikTok..."

[–] Azal@pawb.social 6 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I hope he's right.

I've also lived in the south and I've seen the pro-confederacy movement get stronger as I grew older, so I don't agree that it's on its last breath... but I really do hope I'm wrong.

I’m up in Idaho and while we’ve always had white nationalists, the past couple of decades it’s become a haven for the ones fleeing blue states. One tried to unseat our old school Republican type governor this week and though he lost, he still got 30% of the vote. He’s a real estate agent and specifically markets “move to Idaho if you’re white”, there’s a lot of them here now that make racism the goal. Some of our rural towns have become white nationalist enclaves. Boise is the one city they can’t flip and they caravan in from the boonies to roll coal and harass us any time we have a protest. One of our DFP rallies was about 100 of us protesting and several hundred counter protesting, many of them armed. Neonazi bikers, excon white boys covered in Swazis, boogaloos, and the cops stood with them. The cops watched one point an AR at us and simulate shooting us; nothing happened. In the 90s they’d crawl out of their compound and have a parade once a year, now they behave worse every day in public.

[–] AlJones@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

The pro Confederacy movement has been alive and well since the Confederacy f****** died. they killed Martin Luther King. it hasn't gone away. none of them are punished. racism is alive and well in America. it's all f****** propagated by these disgusting billionaire leaches like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I think that it's been really galvanized the last couple of decades. People forget the money and power structures here are largely dynastic and have been for a while.

I guess it's what works.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I've been saying that the teabaggers are the last gasp of the Angry White Man and Donvict was their last bid to try to reverse several decades worth of progress.

So far, it hasn't worked out. They are still here, fucking shit up.

The teabaggers renamed themselves "maga". They used to be the Birchers way back.

The Angry White Man was the term in the 90s for the exact same type of people we see in the "brosphere" these days; many of which were not even born in the 90s...unfortunately, these types manage to clone more of themselves in younger generations.

I hope this time it turns out to be true. We shall see.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (16 children)

Maybe if we stop inventing terms for literally everything a white man could ever say or do and then turning it into yet another reason to manufacture outrage, then we'll stop pushing vast swathes of every generation of young adults into echo chambers where they get radicalized into these hateful extremist camps.

Don't get me wrong, I hate maga, fascists, white supremacy, and evangelical nationalism. If you read this as a defense of those camps then you're missing my point entirely.

I'm just saying that I might easily be labeled as an "angry white man" if I'm ever forced into a situation where I have to choose between standing up for myself or rolling over and taking it in the ass. And then once you get that label, suddenly no progressive people will be your friend, so it's not surprising that so many impressionable and dejected young people wind up in toxic right-wing spaces.

I'll admit, it gets fucking frustrating. There's always a word for whatever it is, whether it's "performative," or "white saviorism," or "virtue signaling" whenever you're trying to do something good; "mansplaining" whenever you're passionate about something, "fragility" whenever you get upset and let it show, etc.

Like, I get it, other demographics have it bad and in many cases worse. But nobody else has to put up with this particular type of shit. I'm pretty progressive and I despise machismo culture, so I try to let that stuff roll off my back, and I'll never personally wind up in right-wing spaces. But man it gets fucking lonely when literally no one will respect you or even permit you to insist on having basic self-respect, except in the only places where you're accepted (at least until you make it known that you're a socialist), where you refuse to hang out anyway because they're primarily full of toxic right-wing white men who only think you're "a good ole boy" because you look like them.

Fuck maga. Fuck fascism. Fuck white supremacy, and fuck evangelical nationalism.

But also, fuck broad generalizations that lump everyone of a certain demographic into one category based on immutable characteristics.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, I agree with you and I've been involved with enough conversations to know precisely what you mean. I was talking about the specific AWM phenomenon that even had Chomsky commenting on it. He said something to the effect of: "yeah, they have a right to be angry, and should be angry, but they are angry at the wrong things" (steered there by the MSM).

But back to what often almost seems like a concerted effort to peel off white men and make them Republicans...yeah, it's immensely frustrating. I suspect at least some of it is a psyops being done by conservatives and enemies of this country, TBH.

However, there does seem to be a certain kind of person that actually seems to believe that they can lecture and cow and browbeat and name-call others into "doing the work", etc. To be perfectly frank, there are a lot of people that don't have the time to run through this fabricated gauntlet of perfect liberal checklists. People are run ragged, worried about losing their job if they even have one, or working multiple "gigs" to try to pay the bills.

And even if they did have some level of comfort and leisure, that's not how you build rapport with others. Giving people a big stack of homework you expect them to do and tell them to run along and come back once they are then properly enlightened at Purity Pony University is going to work on probably single digits numbers of people...

Believe me, I've seen absurd levels of this. As a more recent example: I was told I really could not talk about fiction in any meaningful way - specifically, sci-fi/fantasy, unless I had already read a specific checklist of queer/trans authors. I mean....what even the fuck? Other than just scoring points among possibly dozens of people, what is this going to achieve? It's certainly not a way to build a coalition.

The truly sad thing is that when some people experience this, may think all liberals are actually like this (including the politicians, which absolutely are not like this), figure that liberals have zero interest in their support, tell them all to fuck off, and just flounce off to either not vote, or worse, vote for Trump.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I agree with you.

Chomsky wasn't wrong in that quote (even though he's a deceptive, hypocritical snake; and I say that as someone who used to look up to him). Arguably most, or at least many "Angry White Men" are angry at the wrong things (because they've been manipulated to be). But that's no reason to lump every white man who happens to be angry into that category. It's a thought-stopper.

Some of us are angry at the right things. But it's impossible to have class solidarity when everyone just trivializes you as a "fragile, angry white man" and assumes you're only upset because you're a racist piece of shit and not because you have a righteous indignation against an unjust system while you're also being unfairly blamed for that unjust system solely due to the race and sex that you were born.

I totally agree about the psyop, although there are enough people it's worked so thoroughly on that they seem to be carrying the baton all on their own at this point.

But yeah, most of us don't have the time or energy to jump through those hoops anymore. Millions of us tried back in 2020, but it seems we were only punished for it by the same people we were trying to show solidarity with, uplift, and make space for. Like, I'm not going to be used as a punching bag just because I make myself an easy target by being vulnerable, expressing empathy, and demonstrating goodwill. The world is collapsing too rapidly for that shit. I need to fend for myself like everyone else now.

They finally got their wish though. The middle class is losing its "privilege" at an alarming rate. I'm not sure how that helps anyone in poverty. Although I've been calling that out for years anyway. The focus should be on uplifting the disenfranchised and extending privilege to the marginalized; not tearing down the (^relatively^) privileged out of envy or spite. That only helps the oligarchs, and it's clearly working as intended.

Believe me, I've seen absurd levels of this.

Yeah, just scroll down in this thread to witness the absurdity.

And don't even get me started on literary analysis! That's a field I would find interesting if it wasn't so saturated with worn-out clichés, self-fellating manufactured outrage, mixed messaging, double-standards, hypocritical exceptionalism, virtue signaling, and thought-stopping pandering by people in desperate need to justify a master's thesis. My god, it gets my blood pressure elevated

At some point I tried to care, but eventually it got exhausting and I stopped caring. Aside from the fact that I'll never be able to publish a novel because it would get torn apart for no reason other than the fact that I'm a white man (seriously, no possible depiction of anyone but other white men will slide through the "purity filter": they're either too perfect or too flawed, too idealized or too realistic, etc.; but if I only depict white men to avoid the issue then clearly it's just racist and sexist fodder, so I guess I just wrote write anything then!); aside from that, I'll just read books quietly and not talk about them so I don't have to listen to an insufferable lecture on fantasy tropes and how they're ostensibly embedded with fascist values (I'm sorry, but fuck Mordor, they're fucking evil, and Aragorn was not a jingo-nationalist, he had a duty to save the civilized world from the imperial warmachine next door).

It's certainly not a way to build a coalition.

Yeah, I keep telling people this. They always hit me with "why would I want to build a coalition with them" implying I'm trying to defend actual racists, sexists, and fascists, rather than arguing that misapplying those labels just to flame people for quick internet points is precisely what forces those people eventually into extremist camps. It's called a self-fulfilling prophecy; it's not some fringe theory.

They compare that to an abuser saying "look what you made me do," but it's more like an outsider observer saying "you badgered this person into hysterics, and now you're accusing them of needless aggression because they finally reached their breaking point."

And honestly it's more about the large-scale trend of corralling people into echo chambers to be poached and radicalized by extremist groups. I've done counter-insurgency/stability ops in the past, and a major part of that is reducing the recruitment pool by learning the unmet needs of the population and building goodwill to prevent them from being radicalized in the first place.

The truly sad thing is that when some people experience this, may think all liberals are actually like this (...) figure that liberals have zero interest in their support, tell them all to fuck off, and just flounce off to either not vote, or worse, vote for Trump.

Yeah, exactly. Sympathy burnout is a thing. And also, it really doesn't help to dispel the right-wing caricature of "Angry radical communist socialist liberal leftist extremists." Obviously that's a self-contradictory, oxymoronic, and hyperbolized statement conflating multiple groups and lacking any context or nuance. But behaving like the caricature they depict does not help to prove them wrong.

And before that, they were the Nazis. The point is, every era, going back to the beginnings of civilization, has this same demographic segment of Sociopathic lunatics who want to take over the world, and force everyone else to do their bidding.

A healthy society recognizes the serious dangers that those people pose, and never allow those people to gain too much power. But now and then, a society let's down their guard, and those people rise up and take power. They've had different names over the years - Confederates, Nazis, MAGA, etc., but they're all the same people. We just made the mistake of letting them off the leash.

We've seen what these people have done in the past, how much blood they're willing to shed to keep power, so we can predict what they'll do in the future. The worst of MAGA is still ahead of us, and it is going to get much uglier before it gets better. For one thing, he has no intention of leaving after 2028.

That's a refreshingly candid condemnation of all the things Trump and the GOP have been doing. I hope this pisses off the apathetical assholes who didn't vote in the first place to actually give a shit and do so against them.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 20 points 3 days ago (2 children)

That's a good speech. I really hope the republican party and its ideals die out, but I don't think it's going to go peacefully.

[–] Curious_Canid@piefed.ca 2 points 2 days ago

The Republican ideals died out in the early 80's. What we have now is the pure sociopathy of a movement without any ideals. It doesn't really think, it just feels, and most of what it feels is fear and anger.

Watch the video, worth it. I can't find a transcript.

[–] techt@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I made one based on the subtitles from the video:

I have no doubt in my mind that the map's going to pass. If y'all can give us less than zero seats, you would do it. Y'all do this under the orders of somebody that said the Civil Rights Act was harmful to white people. That it caused reverse racism. RFK [Jr.] said that Black children are overfilled on antidepressants and that they need to be reparented on different farms. All of them. Pete Hegseth constantly brings Doug Wilson to the Pentagon to give a prayer service. Doug Wilson is the same pastor that said that slave owners were on strong spiritual ground. I don't have no belief in no morality on anybody that follow Donald Trump. If you wasn't with this map, you wouldn't be underneath this president, you wouldn't be in your party. You would stand up, you would stand against it, you would speak out about it. So, as far as I'm concerned, if you here as one of these Trump Republicans, you already showed us who you are. You showed us what you want to do. And I believe the country as a whole is rebuking your party. Y'all are in a death spiral. That's why y'all have to redistrict. That's why y'all have to cheat. That's why Trump gotta go to Texas and say he entitled to five more seats. It's because y'all know what y'all doing is abhorrent. We letting our people die in Iran based on false pretense that Tulsi Gabbard and y'all can't say it ain't real. Y'all okay with all that, so I'm positive y'all gonna be okay with the maps. But the beautiful thing is, the children that y'all have made and the people that's younger than y'all don't support none of this racism that y'all want. The MAGA party is the last breath of the Confederacy and I'll be happy to see Millenials and Gen Z bury y'all. There will be no more of your party. The midterms gonna come, y'all gonna get wiped out. Trump gonna get dragged out of the White House and I'mma love every second of it, because y'all loved every second of the suffering that he caused to everybody in this country and worldwide. We starving Cuba, we bombed Nigeria, we holding Zimbabwe and Zambia hostage for their minerals. We don't want to give them AIDS support. The pro-lifers that say all life is special, y'all letting kids die of AIDS. What part of your Bible say that? Point out the scripture. I think everybody would love to see it. And we would love to see y'all in the midterms.
