Apologies for the Reddit link but not sure where else to find it… Joseph Gordon-Levitt gave a nice quick summary of why AI toys are a bad idea:

The Joseph Gordon-Levitt?? Huh, is he cool? That is a very informative video.

Looking at his Wikipedia… actually no, he is not. A Zionist and into “effective altruism”.

Baby Beaver is learning how to wave goodbye, and climb down from the sofa, it's great. It's frustrating how little we see her every day, it's basically just a 2 hour window from when we get home, till her bedtime.

Baby is SO CLOSE to crawling! They’ll get up on their knees and kinda rock back and forth but we’re not quite sure what to do with our arms yet.

Ended up putting kiddo into daycare with a friend that runs one out of their house. Still pretty nervous about baby getting Covid but my friend let me put up an air purifier in their busiest room and if any of the other kids get sick I think I can pull baby for a week and work from home. We’re doing the best we can with what we have ultimately. And on the bright side, looks like they do have fun there!

Hello friends.

I feel bad for this weekend because on Saturday we promised the kid we would go to the zoo on Sunday and then he forgot about and also we did house work all day. I feel like he had two parents home but both of us were off doing things so we weren’t really “home” if that makes sense.

We found a bunch more mold behind one of the walls downstairs a few weeks ago and that is leading to days of work. I also purchased 4 more air filters and a dehumidifier. If anyone wants to complain about mold with me I can go on for days.

So while we were doing important work it still kinda feels like we robbed that kid of quality time.

Mold is the WORST. We had a similar issue before we had kids. Landlord really dragged their feet doing anything and we had a giant hole in the wall with a fan on 24/7 in our basement for like a whole year, basically until we moved out. Hopefully you’re able to get it sorted quicker than us.

Stuff happens though. It’s tough to get in quality kid time some weekends, especially when we only have so many days to not be working. Zoo’s not going anywhere, and I’m sure your kiddo will be just as excited to go another time. :)

Pretty sure my kid is the only one at her elementary school without unregulated internet access. We’ve locked down her DNS so only certain websites are available. Other parents just slap an iPad on their kids and let them go to town. I swear to god half the boys are going to be sucked into the manosphere by the time they’re in middle school. I don’t know what the other parents are thinking. Maybe they’ve never been so unfortunate as to have visited the dark corners of the web themselves but holy fuck.

Yeah our kids do not have unlimited access to the internet. They don't even have limited access to a dedicated device. I have no idea how some parents can let the kids walk around with ipads. Whenever we go shopping i can't help but notice if a kid has access to a device.

We watch a lot of TV though. But we go through phases. I think we're getting into a detox phase soon... We've been watching to much TV recently. The problem right now is the 2yo has a bad habit of waking up from anything from 2am to 5am and getting in bed. He rolls around like a top, kicking and pushing against me mostly. So we've been sleeping like shit. Being fucking exhausted makes screens really tempting.

makes screens really tempting

It's a very hard needle to thread. Short term gain (SILENCE), long term pain (insufferable behavioural issues).

Because you know the SECOND that you end screen time they won't leave you alone or shut the fuck up.

Not sure about a 2 yo, but when they're a bit older and in school we've found the sweet spot is 2 hr per day screen time on the weekend, 1 hr per day during the week for educational media only. Seems to hit just right. Not to mention keeping them in extra-curricular to keep them busy.

Good luck. Sweet mother of god good luck.

My two year old currently does the same thing! He also needs to be touching me with some random body part. So there is sometimes a foot on my face. Haha. It’s wild.

Audio books help him settle down a little. Right now we are listening to the coco storyette by tammy trull. It has some clips from the movie itself so it keeps him interested.

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 1 points 3 days ago

My local library has these picture books with a little audio book player module glued in them and they fucking rock. I have to snag a new one every visit lol

[–] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago

It's wild, i don't let my kids play roblox, and we keep youtube kids to a minimum and other folks just seem to do w.e.

After being bummed out about missing out on Metallica tickets I managed to get a ticket to Opeth on Friday. This was after the show was sold out for weeks. I've seen them a couple of times and they're great, so it was good to see them again. Especially considering my brother was going to go watch them but someone at the airport drove the baggage handler into the plane and the shitty regional airline out there doesn't give a fuck and didn't have anything else scheduled in time.

On Saturday I took the kids for a bike ride in the pram, we ended up going to a nearby wetland and walking around there because this new park near us isn't open yet. I haven't gone out with the kids like that in a long time so it was great to just go out for a walk and keep them busy. They immediately picked up sticks as big as themselves and carried them around for the whole walk, and not long in we saw a rabbit, which they chased after straight away. They were looking for rabbits for the rest of the walk and it was perfect timing we saw some again right as we got back to the bike.
