“California’s redistricting scheme is a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process,” Attorney General Pam Bondisaid in an emailed statement. “Governor Newsom’s attempt to entrench one-party rule and silence millions of Californians will not stand.”

Every accusation is an admission. But this one is just so flagrant.

As I recall, the plan that passed contains "it only happens if Texas does it" and "it's temporary".

[–] lIlIlIlIlIlIl@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

That was removed as Texas has moved ahead first, so that provision was struck

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 5 points 3 days ago

That's why NC is also on the move to increase red seats.

Oh no, wait... that's not connected, the NC GOP has always tried to find ways to cheat for power. Equal representation is a dangerous thing for Republicans.

The blazes power grab of us!!!

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"I know that behavior! I've done it so many times!"

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Doing it actively!

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

It's not just flagrant; it's fragrant, too. The hypocrisy stinks like shit to high heavens.

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 68 points 3 days ago (2 children)

So they're going to sue Texas then, right?...right???

All jokes aside, this will immediately get tossed because Texas did this exact same thing FIRST, and without a populous vote. There is no legal standing for this whatsoever, aside from trying to play the DEI card, which of course they will, but it will fail.

The funnier result would be to have California maps overturned, and then immediately have Texas' And every other red shithole's maps ruined by the now standing precedent lol

[–] ExFed@programming.dev 29 points 3 days ago

Or the courts will find some way to single out CA's map; like the fact that they even had a public referendum makes it illegal ... Maybe that's a bit cynical, but that's where I'm at these days.

[–] 7U5K3N@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 days ago

I fucking hope so. Tennessee was butchered a while back. I'd love to have Nashville be back blue again. Like it was for 160 years

This is a states' rights issue: the right of the state to do what is convenient for the states' rights party.

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 38 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It’s journalistic malpractice that the title of this article suggests the California referendum will be what tips control of Congress. Congress is tipped, the California referendum only seeks to right it.

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It ain’t going to right it. It’s just going to make it less tipped toward the GOP.

The GOP is also like to gain 2-3 seats in Ohio, and 1 in Missouri with these shady midcycle redistricting efforts.

All in all, this BS will probably net the GOP 2-3 seats as it stands now.

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

True, but my point was more of that the referendum does not seek to give advantage to Democrats.

Perhaps naïvely, I have a small degree of hope that the overall electric being unhappy with the Republicans might actually backfire on their redistricting plans.

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Democrats shitting the bed and then not only capitulating to the Republican shutdown but further negotiating away the ACA subs, hemp, and paying over $500k-Millions to multiple GOP reps, doesn't help the momentum gained prior to a few nights ago. I hope that further emboldens voters to get out, vote against the GOP, but also vote those turncoats out on the "left". God I'm so fucking pissed at them....

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 28 points 3 days ago

they suing texas?

[–] callouscomic@lemmy.zip 16 points 3 days ago

The people of California apparently voted for it on the ballot. Seems good to me.

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Pam bondi... God I pray a brick falls on her head one day.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 days ago

They've already tanked their own case, by not saying anything about any of the Republican states that are currently doing the same thing. This is selective prosecution.

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50 — the recent ballot initiative that junked California’s pre-existing electoral map in favor of a rush-job rejiggering of California’s congressional district lines

They’re going to try to prove this lie, despite CA saying that this was purely about political party power, not race. And the SCOTUS already said that horseshit is perfectly fine.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Is there actually a plan to get a ruling without precluding all their gerrymandering power grabs? Or are they just going by the seat of their pants?
