The ruling Communist Party’s internet censorship, known as the “Great Firewall,” is another drawback.

The internet on this side of the firewall sucks donkey ass lol how is that a drawback

VPNs are pretty readily available and while technically not legal there’s no enforcement. It’s an annoyance but not much more.

it's literally them using the whole piracy vs streaming service effect to do internet protectionism imo lol, people will pay for stuff when it's convienent but when you make it annoying (having to swap between several apps while paying 100+ a month etc.), they will just start pirating again. same thing here, make it kinda annoying to access the rest of the internet (which is dominated by english speakers anyways) and the average person just goes "eh fuck that, ima just login to XHS or whatever"

We have seen with TikTok how the US reacts as soon as there is a single mayor foreign platform.

Can’t access chapo.chat without a VPN

[–] Coolkidbozzy@hexbear.net 20 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

they need to grow their domestic version of chapo.chat, it's a protectionist policy

I'm curious if they'll be able to snatch up the foreign tech workers in the US who are getting yanked around by Trump and ICE and H1B bullshit.

I'm gonna see if it's something I can do. I got laid off because of this AI bullshit and I'd love to GTFO of the US

If RedNote comments are any indication, I'll be surprised if many Indians end up in this program.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 day ago

this one would be willing if it turns out that china's version isn't as exploitative as the american one
