KYIV and KHARKIV, Ukraine — Maryna Mytsiuk spends her free time at a shooting range outside Kyiv, hyper-focused on hitting her targets. She's got to practice. She's waiting for a call that, any day, will send her to war.

"Of course, I'd like to be in a combat position," said Mytsiuk, a 27-year-old folklore scholar who speaks Japanese and works at a nonprofit. "With my build and height, I'm not a natural fit for that … so I'm training very hard."

You don't shoot in this war, infantry rarely even gets to positions due to frontline being overrun by drones. When you get there you just sit tight and fucking pray that nobody sees your position and report back where you seen or heard something. For the next two weeks or months. Depends on weather and other factors. Also lower height and weight is a must in assault forces, trenches are extremely fucking tight for normal sized people, r*ssian ones are extremely shallow sometimes.

Anyway, it's not hard to learn to pilot an fpv, it's hard to find technically inclined people that understand or want to understand radio and shit.

C'est la vie.

The article doesn't specifically say anything about why her height and build aren't well suited.

There's a significant section in there about air and sea drone operators as well.

But that's besides the point, this article was more about policy, culture and the different ways women are serving in the war.

There is a photo of mentioned woman, and pilots themselves shoot no guns. 😺
