I swore I'd never pay full price for a game charging $70, but a sibling who I don't get to see very much anymore recently got it and is super excited to play it with me. I figured the extra cost is worth the good memories and bonding.

Replaced a 500GB m.2 with a 4TB so I could comfortably put cachyOs and win11 on the same drive and free up a different drive for whatever.

Tea. Its always tea. It'll be tea again soon.

2021 Camphornought from white2tea. Its like chocolate, wood, and leather.

I've been on a big puerh binge.

Honorable mention: 2016 Fade (also from white2tea).

What's important about year with tea? I find this super intriguing.

[–] pebbles@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago

Ah these are puerh tea! That means they are fermented. So like other fermented products (wine for example) they change with age.

If you ever want to buy some you should know there are two different types:

Raw (sheng): This came first. This tea is slow aged, and anything younger than 10 years is like a really unique green tea or light oolong. I've not had sheng older than 10 years because it gets really expensive.

Ripe (shu/shou): This was made to imitate what 20-30 years aged sheng taste by doing a hot humid quicker fermentation (wet pile). I'd still wait a year or so after these are made because that quick fermentation can leave a funky taste that fades with time.

2021 Camphornought is a ripe. It being 4 years old means it has like no wet pile taste.

2016 Fade is a raw. It taste like a green oolong with a bit of woodyness I love and seem to only find in puerh.

Over 100 bucks on a really high quality flashlight. Actually bought 2, one for work and one to keep in my car.

[–] TheAsianDonKnots@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago

I got into a pretty rough accident so I bought Metal Gear Solid V again (not on sale), so I could play laying down on my handheld. I figure it cost me $40 for at least 100 hours. Cheaper than a movie but I really shouldn’t be spending $40 right now.

Flight and hotel for Iceland next August for the eclipse.

[–] niktemadur@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Not for me, but for my son who just entered a school that hands out a lot of homework, I bought him a desk with adjustable motorized height, so he can turn it into a standing desk if he wants, if he gets fidgety.

A much needed soldering station. It's not a WS81, but I don't need that many watts, as I only solder tiny stuff. I still consider a Weller WE1010 a bit of a splurge, though. At least when compared against the shitty one that finally broke a couple of days ago, it's a massive upgrade.

Sadly, DHL has my package in hold for unknown reasons.

Sony 90mm f/2.8 macro lens

[–] HowlsSophie@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

A vintage lava lamp. I'm justifying it in my head because it's dropped $60 since I first added it to my watchlist.

[–] boaratio@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

I moved to an area that has a lot of steep hills, so I splurged on a front hub motor e bike conversion kit for my 18 speed. Now maybe my out of shape self can make it to town and back.

Got me a pair of AirPods Max. Used, refurbished. Fantastic for what I need them for.

[–] Shimitar@downonthestreet.eu 7 points 3 days ago

Book nooks...

Not that expensive, but pure wasted useless money indeed...

But they are satisfying to build....

A rotring mechanical pencil, i really like having a lot of control and precision when i write. so i thought lets get one that'll last me a lifetime and more, dont regret it a thing, since my handwriting is legible now

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

My honey was complaining that the memory foam mattress was too soft, so I ordered a king sized 14" firm one.

Holy hell that thing is heavy and a total pain in the ass to get up stairs.

Now we have to wait 48 hr for the thing to unshrink as it blocks the entire dining area.

A pair of Doc Marten Oxfords. For about three years I've been buying shit quality department store dress shoes for $60 a pop when they inevitably disintegrate every few months.

A assortment of Japanese pens and mechanical pencils. They’re all like $5-15 each. The kuru-toga advance pencils are pretty cool because they spin the lead a small amount between strokes so you don’t end up with a sharp point on one side.

[–] SaneMartigan@aussie.zone 2 points 3 days ago

I have a kuru toga, it's great.

My Apple Watch SE1 exploded (not really but a spicy pillow popped the screen off adhesive). Got an SE3 because Apple seems dead set on delaying interoperability with third party smartwatches in the EU as much as they can. I thought I could stay on iOS 18 because SE3 is compatible with iPhones going back to XS but it looks like I’ll have to update to Liquid Ass. According to the progress bar downloading the update will take 4 days so I can watch how pretty my new watch looks on my desk. Really happy with the purchase so far /s

It'll be 100% tencel lyocell bedding soon, but I'm waiting to see if any brands I'm looking at go on sale for black friday

[–] eezeebee@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

The Final Fantasy Tactics remake. I never buy new games, but this one is special to me and I wanted to vote with my wallet to praise them for finally releasing it for PC. They did a good job with updating it, too, so I'm happy.

I’ve got a new mechanical watch arriving soon. It’s a pretty cheap Chinese watch so it won’t be super pretty, but it has all of the stuff I want after getting my first automatic a couple years ago. A chronograph, which I don’t know I’ll use but it will look cool, a transparent back to watch all the mechanics moving, and a (hopefully) legit sapphire crystal face cover instead of the bio-plastic one my current watch has (it’s covered in scratches).

But the real selling point for me is the tritium tubes in each hand and each point on the face. This will give them a soft glow under their own power for ~25 years, letting me tell the time in the dark!

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 days ago

Couple 8tb hard drives, small(ish) 12u server rack, and soon a network switch (because my current one hasn't had a firmware release in several years) once I've shopped around a bit.

[–] Cris_Color@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

A little instant film camera made by fujifilm and a little old photo printer that doesn't require an app

Sadly the photo printer is broken but I'm gonna try fixing it cause I really wanna be able to do that sort of thing

[–] zlatiah@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Do intangible things count? I'm planning a 4-day trip to a nearby country which I anticipate to cost up to 500 EUR total. Otherwise... not much

[–] Elextra@literature.cafe 3 points 3 days ago

Magic the Gathering. I have learned its cardboard crack and I have issues stopping!!

I’m about to, tomorrow. I’ve been wanting an extended range headless guitar but headless versions have always been way more expensive than their regular counterparts. Found one on sale for close to half the original price, so I’m pulling the trigger before they run out. I’ll just sell my current guitar to make up a third of the price.

I've set aside some money for a tattoo I've booked in a couple weeks from now.

I told my artist I want some isopods around some mushrooms and I probably won't see it until the day before or the day of the tattoo. Which is fine by me, I've been seeing the same artist for over 2 years now when she had just started tattooing on skin as an apprentice. I have a lot of trust in her vision and skill.

I absolutely love her style. She only does blackwork and she seems to have her own unique style which is often quite bold looking. I'm looking forward to it.

1000€ for a 3d printer and VR headset.

[–] doc@fedia.io 2 points 3 days ago

I absolutely don't need 17 more disc golf discs, but I'm getting one of the special annual mystery boxes from one of the major manufacturers anyway. Haven't got it yet, but I have one reserved from a local store.

Finally decided enough was enough and got a new laptop. Picked a Slimbook creative, Manjaro edition, but will put CachyOS on it soon. It's just such a nice machine compared to my old one. And comparatively competitive price, but "splurged" clearly still applies.

I'm probably frugal to a fault but... I got a Ninja Creami to make ice cream like desserts.

And some friends are proud of how good a host they are when I stay over, I will not be out hosted so I splurge on food, booze and cooking to try and show them up. I've just made vegan sausage and water melon sorbet to take this Sunday.
