The key to good camouflage is jpeg compression

Oh! I thought the post was just a joke. Thanks!

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 17 points 2 weeks ago

The expression when the biped just won't stop following you

[–] TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Baby rbesfe

[–] ekZepp@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

When you're right, you're right.

I totally agree, the lack of pixels also contributes

[–] TwilightKiddy@programming.dev 88 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

I say it should be illegal to incorporate the word "snow" in the names of things that are not white.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 28 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Many animals that live in temperate climates change colors every year.

It's not the case of this one. I just wanted to point that many do :)

(Now, seriously, gray and white are probably a very good disguise in places where the snow doesn't take over everything all the time.)

[–] TwilightKiddy@programming.dev 2 points 2 weeks ago

Hmm... "Sometimes Snow "?

[–] FuyuhikoDate@feddit.org 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Also Greenland isn't green...

[–] TwilightKiddy@programming.dev 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yes! We should have swapped the names for Iceland and Greenland so long ago!

[ insert here snow white live action joke ]

[–] oxideseven@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

Look up fire coral :D

[–] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

They live in areas that are covered by snow for at least part of the year, such as the Himalayas, Tibet and parts of Central Asia and Mongolia. The animal itself can vary in colour from cream to grey or tan.

[–] halvar@lemy.lol 37 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

am I the only one who can't find it?

[–] Klear@quokk.au 63 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)
[–] Linearity@piefed.zip 50 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Okay I’m sure it’s much easier to recognise it irl with depth perception
And ESPECIALLY without JPG compression™

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 33 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, and the scale of the picture itself is hard to determine. You don’t know how big the thing you’re looking at is, so you don’t know if you’re supposed to see just a paw, the entire creature, etc.

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

Shoulda called it a rock leopard smh my head

[–] remon@ani.social 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Right under the snow patch on the top you can see the face.

[–] ik5pvx@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

Just beside the perfectly focused rock wall on the left, yes, it's that blurred thing

[–] m0darn@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's brown, right below the big snow bank at the top

[–] Blooper@lemmynsfw.com 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's staring right at the camera between a jumble of compressed jpeg artifacts.

[–] blackbrook@mander.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago

One of which seems to have eaten a quarter of its head. Very impressive how they have evolved to take advantage of JPEG compression for camouflage!

[–] unprovenbreeze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

Right in the middle of the picture, near the rock. I had to zoom in to find it 😅

[–] Bonus@mander.xyz 36 points 2 weeks ago
[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 26 points 2 weeks ago

To be fair, the (apparently) huge icicles throw off the sense of scale.

[–] konalt@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Every time I see this image I swear it moves

[–] Neverclear@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago

It... sees you

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Idk, the kitty contrasts with the snow a lot, I was able to spot it immediately!

[–] i_love_FFT@jlai.lu 1 points 2 weeks ago

Relevant username!

[–] Imhotep@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago

Hint: it's a rock leopard

[–] ikilledtheradiostar@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

do prey animals have all pixelated lo rez vision?

[–] huf@hexbear.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

i think a lot of animals are pretty shit at seeing stationary things. by which i mean a lot worse than us.

[–] AngryishHumanoid@lemmynsfw.com 11 points 2 weeks ago

That's a horrible camouflage job, doesn't look anything like snow.

[–] Sv443@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Waiting for the day I see this pic and the leopard is edited out

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Here you go, that didn't take long.

Here you go, that didn't take long.

[–] xtrapoletariat@beehaw.org 5 points 2 weeks ago

I think the pink ones didn't fare so well in evolutionary terms.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Make sure you click the HD button.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

Hint: Don't look in the snow for something white.

[–] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Squint, it'll be easier.

Also, while impressive, I find this, if taken in the context of a test about a species' ability to camouflage, as not very realistic idk about other species but human eyes primarily work woth contrast and movement. So much so, that the moving dot that will be the leopard will be caught by our peripheral vision just as easily as a pink panther.

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

I was 99% convinced this was a trick but its actually there lmao

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

well enough to fool me and feast on my body as it seems
