You downvote youtube links because they're not peertube.

I downvote youtube links because they're videos without a text synopsis.

We are not the same.

You downvote youtube links because they're not peertube.

I check if the video is licensed under creative commons and mirror it to peertube.

We are not the same.

I've been posting videos on Mastodon and then making link posts to Lemmy with the link being the Mastodon hosted video link.

I don't know how to make that sound less confusing... I'm on very little sleep.

I'm trying to encourage people to use other video services in general but getting out of YT jail is pretty hopeless. Happy when I do see a non-YT vid tho.

[–] sk1nnym1ke@piefed.social 15 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

It's a vicious circle.

People don't use other video services because there aren't much content.

Content creator don't upload their videos to other video services because there aren't viewers.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

It costs content creators almost nothing to upload to PeerTube in addition to Youtube. Shifter and Oh The Urbanity! manage it; why can't others?

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 2 points 2 weeks ago

People don't host video sites because of how demanding and not profitable it is.

YouTube doesn't break even. Google runs it at a loss just to have that advantage.

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 1 points 2 weeks ago

And hosting lots of videos is expensive

[–] maam@feddit.uk 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

We’re not passengers but participants, let us not be complicit in feeding the beast.

I run two insignificant communities for posting vids. Gotta post YT to have something, but I try to find alternatives and encourage others too.

I've been trying to get into peertube for over a year, but I don't understand it well enough to start.

[–] maam@feddit.uk 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Which instance did you pick?

[–] 18107@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I don't know what instances exist, how to pick one, or if there is any advantage to picking a specific instance.

I suspect I'll be fine once I get past that hurdle.

[–] maam@feddit.uk 7 points 2 weeks ago

I would suggest Peertube.wtf since it is stable.

~~Do they not know you can use Peertube to load youtube links? I didn't even know Peertube hosted anything; I've only known it as a front-end.~~

I'm thinking of NewPipe. My bad.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I was actually thinking of NewPipe not PeerTube 😵‍💫

[–] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yea, that makes more sense :D

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Can one post a link to a youtube video directly on peertube?

[–] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 6 points 2 weeks ago

No, but you can import a video from YouTube to PeerTube.

[–] lurch@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago

if you're logged out from yt, deleted your cookies etc or even use a fresh browser install and visit any yt video from a german IP, reject all tracking in the popup and switch your region to another country (eg Azerbajan or so), it will still recommend you "related" propaganda from the new german nazi party that will try to make you xenophobic, transphobic and anti-left. doesn't even matter what video you visited. i don't want to see that disgusting shit. so excuse me, if i downvote every link to this nazi enabler site. imagine kids viewing that shit after some skibidi and getting indoctrinated. not okay.

[–] w3ird_sloth@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

NewPipe let's you add PeerTube instances in the app. I always felt like it would be a good way to get people to switch since you can have YouTube add free plus whatever other instances you want altogether. That being said, you still have to get them over the fdroid/obtanium/sideloading. And with the changes coming to android it would be tough. But wouldn't having an app you can have something like Mastadon + other garbage social media a person wants together, like how there are (were?) single FB/Twitter apps help with the conversion? This is probably sacrilege to a lot of fedi users if its even still possible with all the APIs being locked down (Reddit!!!)

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

These "piped" apps never work for me

[–] w3ird_sloth@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Weird. I've been using the main newpipe branch on fdroid for about a year. It crashes out sometimes after I've been watching for awhile but a force stop usually fixes it. Or YouTube will change an api and it needs updated. I guess that itself is a no-go for a lot of users though 😢

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

Based on recognizing the meme format, I thought this would be a meme about the AWS outage.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

PieFed automatically offers a piped.video link for every YT post.

[–] Linktank@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

If they want to make peertube popular then they need to make it not have trash speeds. To compete you have to be a COMPETITOR.
