Don't pee on jellyfish stings by the way. It's unsanitary and doesn't help.

[–] joyjoy@lemmy.zip 40 points 3 days ago (2 children)

No need to pee on your friend. You just need warm water. Soak for 20-45 minutes.

No need to pee on your friend.

Jokes on you. I brought them to swim in jellyfish infested waters precisely to create this opportunity.

They know but pretending they don't 🪼

[–] synapse1278@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I wouldn't willingly go swim with jellyfish for whatever reason. Got sting as a teenager and the burn marks stayed printed onto my skin for well over a year.

As someone living in Queensland Australia. it's not a matter of avoiding being stung, instead you simply hope it isn't the bad one this time.

I'm still convinced that myth started with someone getting caught giving their partner a golden shower.

I thought urine was largely sterile

Turns out Dodgeball was not medically accurate. And if urine isn't sterile, it makes you wonder what else they lied about. Did Patches O'Houlihan not actually like the taste of his own urine? Is there really a link between wrench dodging ability and ball dodging ability? Was it, in fact, a bold strategy, Cotton?

[–] Iunnrais@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Even if it was sterile, that still doesn’t mean “safe to drink”. Lots of sterile things will kill you.

Now, Bear Grylls taught us that in this case, yes, you can drink urine in an emergency. But prefacing it with “it’s sterile!” is both inaccurate and meaningless to the conclusion.

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

Does that also mean that you shouldn't pee on open wounds to clean them? Was everything a lie?? 😫

Also, yoghurt isn't sterile, but arsenic is I think?

[–] Sxan@piefed.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Big Yoghurt doesn't want you to know how delicious arsenic is!

If you have no serious problems with your immune system, the most serious problem with drinking urine is ammonia, and potential of drug residues. The former is safe in small amounts (since there's no real good reason for it, only drink pee for "fetish" reasons), the latter can be pretty bad, since taking medications you don't need can be very bad.

Poo is where you get more of the bad bacteria, which varies with other factors (e.g. food poisoning makes everything much more dangerous), and funnily enough you're more in danger from fecal bacteria getting into your blood stream through a mouth injury or bad gums than through your stomach. And yes, if you could reach your butt, you could lick it clean with not much negative effects considering the other factors such as immune system, and the aforementioned mouth injuries, and some of these kinds of safety precautions are also important if you're only into "regular booty eating" without the dirty part, since the anus is never 100% clean.

Far from the truth.

[–] Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago

They teach troops that sort of thing because it's better than death by dehydration but, no, urine has been shown not to be sterile repeatedly.

Inside the bladder. Sometimes.
