This legislation exists so that Apple is incentivised to develop interoperable systems. Apple opted to degrade experience for everybody rather than allow for level playing field.
Gotta open it up so Meta can data farm apple watch user data, and make it so apple watch owners have to type in the 64 character wifi password. Win win for everyone 🙂
If I want to give my data to Meta, the same way I give it to Apple, that’s my choice. If I can’t give it to Meta then I can’t give it to an open source Pebble watch either and that doesn’t sound as good, eh?
Yeah, better to just turn this off. Id rather not have random, unvetted hardware controlling my iphone hardware. Lock all that garbage out. I want my privacy and security.
In this weird scenario I think your Apple hardware is perfectly safe, nobody is going to buy and pair third party devices for you forcibly.
And if I did, i wouldn't want it secretly exfiltrating everything about me to third party servers from companies that actively refuse to follow laws and regulations regarding data privacy and protections.
Why would you buy it then?
You would be surprised how often people cheap out on their hardware, not knowing how those companies are selling the data about you to make up the rest of the price.
It’s up to regulators and not Apple to be the nanny because Apple uses it to stifle competition. The only free market is a regulated one.
The competition are data hoarders. Stifling data hoarders is fine by me.
Is Pebble a data hoarder? It doesn’t share anything but is restricted from full functionality. You’re using Apple rhetoric where they’ll conflate Meta with everyone else.
Pebble should have access to my text messages and watching my notifications from other apps? No thanks. It can just mind its own business and be a watch.
We don’t think like that in the EU, we like free markets more than anyone else 👍👍👍
You do think like that, or we wouldn't have cookie acceptance popups on every website that participates in data collection.
This is just a grab at apple user data, and Apple actually standing up for its users.
There is no law that requires cookie consent banners, it’s malicious compliance similar to this childish fit from Apple. It just shows that those companies are not interested in providing the best service they can, which is why we have to regulate them up to their tits.
Exactly, these EU laws aren't protecting anyone. Its just bully tactics to get Apple to open up to data hoarders or inconvenience its users by making them type 64 characters wifi passwords. Id argue its EU being childish.
We can agree to disagree at this point, because I doubt we will see eye to eye.
/laughs in mandatory USB-C
Poor USB-D will never be adopted now, unfortunately.
It’s entirely up to the industry because EU didn’t mandate a specific connector, just that they have to agree on one. Very similar to what’s expected of Apple in regards to interoperability - implementation is entirely up to them as long as it’s compliant with EU law.
Free market tho
That’s how it stays free.
They did mandate USB Type-C connector (12, 16 and 24 pin specifically). https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2022/2380
But it can be easily ammended if new standard offers revolutionary benefits.
