I assumed it was based on the timing alone, and as someone who was vocally in favor of merging them, I think it’s an awesome solution. I really hope the people who were opposed to merging like the approach too.

  • it fixes the bad taste that “gossip” left me with
  • it IMO removes the need to try to draw lines between what content belongs where by:
    • not being limited to “public figure slop”, while not disallowing it - there are plenty of cases a post could go in both or either without being the “wrong” comm
    • being broader than slop content, it redefines the focus in a way that may still have some overlap, but is distinct and allows content that didn’t really have a dedicated comm elsewhere

Oh yeah, I think splitting them was kinda silly, but I understand why some people were annoyed with streamer/Twitter nobody shit at the time. I think I heard that the next Lemmy version will incorporate post tagging or something so hopefully people can block content based on tags so it's not an issue
