I didn't get started with it until Persona 5 Royal. You don't need to play them in order, but this one is really polished. Persona 3 remake is also good, but not quite to 5s level. 4 is slightly better than 3 in my opinion. 1 and 2 are vastly different games and can only be played on psx or PSP.
Innocent Sin took 12 years to be released in the West due to having Nazi Imagery, Hitler and Same-Sex Relationships, and then they didn't release Eternal Punishment on the PSP in the West, theres only the PS1 version.
I think they're translated on both PS1 and PSP now for people who care about playing either version, although I can't vouch for the translation quality of any of them.
