You're crossing a stroad.

Someone "in a hurry" decide to run the red light and hits you at 70 km/h (because of course they were speeding, why wouldn't they?), doesn't see you because you're hunched over while you're walking and it's really dark and the person is driving a giant SUV with shit visibility.

Cars are one of the largest source of fatal pedestrian accidents in a major city. How much more likely are you to get into an accident if you're drunk and is less able to pay attention to cars breaking the rules and putting you in danger? Walking safely in most cities is a task you need to be sober for because you have to walk super defensively.

Ontarians, I need your help.

This week I was pulled over by the police for having a kid's seat on my e-bike. I was informed this is illegal in Ontario as Sec. 38 of the HTA doesn't allow anyone under the age of 16 to be on a power-assisted or motor assisted bicycle.

In 2021 the Moving Ontarians More Safely Act came out that separated power-assisted bicycles (like e-bikes) from motor assisted bicycles (like dirt bikes). This will finally allow child seats on e-bikes.

Please call your MPP to get this bill that passed and assented 3 years ago into law.

Details on the wording of the current and assented laws:

currently the Highway Traffic Act, section 38, states : "No person who is the owner or is in possession or control of a motor assisted bicycle or power-assisted bicycle shall permit a person who is under the age of 16 years to ride on, drive or operate the motor assisted bicycle or power-assisted bicycle on a highwau"

the Moving Ontarians More Safely Act, 2021, S.O. 2021, C. 26 - Bill 282 splits this into a few sections: "No person under the age of 14 years shall operate a power-assisted bicycle described in clause (a) of the definition" "No person under the age of 16 years shall operate a power-assisted bicycle described in clause (b) or (c)" and the new section 38.1: "No person under the age of 16 years shall ride on, drive or operate a motor assisted bicycle on a highway" From my perspective this will make e-bikes legal to have kids seats; and separate the class away from gas and electric dirt bikes.

I often see people in the comments acting like having a fast or loud car immediately makes your dick smaller or that you have ED. And people talk about owning a car as if they've never gone above 40 MPH and are terrified to do so.

For context I live in a city with actually ok mass transit, don't own a car, and prefer to bike/take the train whenever possible. Trains, trolleys, bikes, and feet are the best forms of transportation imo.

That being said, body shaming or making fun of people with physical or mental issues (that may be no fault of their own) is just shitty. It makes this community look shitty. I hate reading comments about "loud car small dick this" or "fast car ED that". It's unnecessary. You can shit on asshole drivers without having to stoop that low. Secondly, some women enjoy cars as well; be more creative.

Finally, don't act like cars can't be fun. I'm all for phasing out the automobile and revolutionizing transport by returning to the ways of olde, but cars are fun. I understand some of you are grandparents and don't like someone revving their straight pipes mustang down your block on a Saturday morning. That's completely reasonable. But my god does this community act like you can't have fun in a car. I absolutely enjoy loud and fast and powerful cars, because that's an incredible work of engineering and it simply can be fun. Going fast can be fun. Being in a car that purrs like a lion can be fun. Going offroading or drifting or racing or anything in a car can be fun.

We won't convince people to see our side by shitting on the things they enjoy. We convince people to try and see things from our point of view by actually looking through their perspective first, and acknowledging that while cars can be fun they are not sustainable.

ETA: Some people seem to think I think public roads should still be for cars. Never did I say that. I think the appropriate place for cars is the track. I would love to convert all the roads in my city to a mixture of bike and pedestrian lanes with trolleys running down the median. But cars can be fun and a track day can absolutely be a great time.

The Ontario government is considering bringing forward legislation that could prohibit the installation of bike lanes when lanes for motor vehicles are removed as a result, sources say.

Siemiatycki said "this government has signalled that the car is king," pointing to prior steps the governing Progressive Conservatives (PCs) have taken to ease costs for drivers.

He sees the PCs as making a clear play for the votes of motorists, and believes the policy would also appeal to many drivers frustrated with congestion on the roads.
