SuperTux 0.7.0 (www.supertux.org)
submitted 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) by jazztickets@lemmy.world to c/foss_gaming@lemmy.world

The SuperTux Team is pleased to announce the stable release of version 0.7.0! You may wonder what took us so long to develop another release. Over the past couple of years, we’ve made dozens of changes and improvements to the game, bringing it to a much more polished state. As such, this is likely one of the biggest releases since Milestone 2! Despite that, SuperTux remains the trusted run’n’jump game as you know well… but with this update, it should bring it into a much more finishable state moving forward.

Here are some of the most notable changes since the previous release:

  • Brand new sprites and abilities for Tux: slope sliding, strong buttjumping, rock rolling, and crawling
  • Revamped graphics for most backgrounds, tiles, objects, and badguys
  • Complete level design + story rework of the Story Mode, Revenge in Redmond, and Bonus Island I
  • Not only new NPCs (e.g: Granito) and enemies (e.g: DiveMine, Fish, and Corrupted Granito), but also revamps for numerous enemies such as: GoldBomb, Igel, Ghoul, and both bosses (Yeti and Ghost Tree)
  • New music
  • Level editor revamp
  • Local multiplayer mode
  • New gameplay mechanics such as glinted enemies, keys, the item pocket, and unlockable bonus islands via Tux Dolls
  • Many internal improves and code refactoring, such as moving to SimpleSquirrel
  • Improvements to compilation/porting, including CMake refactor, Android revival, and Flatpak builds

And many more changes and bugfixes not listed here! Really, check the game out to see all the changes!

Thank you so much for the patience everyone had regarding this update. Feel free to report any bugs to our GitHub. We appreciate everyone’s support in keeping this game alive! Happy SuperTuxing! – The SuperTux Team

Hey everyone 👋. I just wanted to share a little personal project that grew a bit more than I initially planned.

The original idea was simply to build a game so I could play Parchis (Ludo) with my family, as it’s a classic in our household. I ended up building the whole thing entirely through "vibecoding" (AI-assisted coding) because I wanted to see how far I could push current AI tools.

The result is a full web multiplayer game (React/Vite frontend + Node/Express/Socket.io backend with SQLite to store game data).

If anyone is curious or wants to spin it up on their local network to play with friends/family: 🔗 Repo: https://codeberg.org/baner/parchis (it has a docker-compose.yml ready to go in seconds).

⚠️ A big warning about security: As I mentioned, I completely built this relying on AI, and it was initially meant as a home project. I am not a cybersecurity expert by any means. While I have briefly exposed it to the internet a couple of times to play with remote relatives, my absolute recommendation is to host it ONLY on your local network (LAN) or behind a VPN (like Tailscale/Wireguard). The nature of AI-generated code means it's probably full of vulnerabilities that I haven't caught. Play at your own risk if you decide to open ports to the wild web! 😅

This is also my first project using a monorepo structure and publishing a Docker image for others to deploy. If you take a look and see something horrible (or something that works surprisingly well haha), all feedback is super welcome. I hope someone finds it fun for a local game night!

Widelands is a free and open source Settlers-like strategy game, and their developers appear to be setting a firm stance against any AI generated contributions.

Blocking AI-Generated Content

The Widelands Development Team is drafting a resolution to reject AI-generated content contributions (code, graphics, music, and others) to the Widelands source code and repositories.

We hold that AI-generated content generally stands on dubious ethical and legal grounds, as it violates the copyright of creators whose work was scraped for the AI's training data set without their permission and without due attribution. Also, we find that it is frequently of low overall quality and/or is overly generic and fails to embrace requirements specific to Widelands.

Pull requests that have been generated by AI may in the future be closed without review.

Widelands is created by people, for people.

The change does not impact add-on uploads, which are each add-on author’s own responsibility, although such add-ons may be moderated more critically by the add-on server maintainers.
Translations are also not in the scope of this policy, and every language team can define its own policy with regard to machine translation.

The policy is still open to discussion here until Tuesday, February 24th, 2026.

The first release of 0 A.D. that doesn't have an Alpha label attached, as the free and open source RTS has grown up with their faster release schedule.

There is no truer adage to me than nothings is perfect. And when it comes to anything related to Discord it’s no different.

Discord itself to me has been an issue for years. Its use of data collection, the obsession of companies trying to buy it all were concerning. For me the latest age verification just further reinforces my beliefs. That being said the majority of users who ignored all this and kept going nothing would change. Most people I know use Discord lightly and aren’t in large chats that use hentai gifs. I still would tell anyone who would listen to get out of dodge. But if you never cared about data usage then yeah maybe not care.

For all the alternatives out there truth is none are really anywhere near perfect. Matrix and most of its clients while encrypted don’t offer true jump in /jump out game chat. More a kin to Skype really. Foss Discord implementations like Spacebar are to all over the place and for me are not really functional. Stoat while probably my favorite is still really small and not holding up to the stress of the user influx. And of course it’s missing “discord features” and the new kid Fluxer while appealing is still to new and it’s monetization model a little to concerning. 300 bucks as a backer for unproven project ? And of course with the exception of Matrix none of the other projects offer encryption.

Truth is no option really is ideal. Truth is all the options have some pretty serious flaws. And truth is getting your large swaths of friends to move might be close to impossible.

So if you are looking to move please do some digging. Ask people who use the apps their opinions. Try to as a group of friends chose to make a move.

And the final truth is it’s a really good thing we finally have some options. No matter the flaws having competition brings innovation.

I hope this posts helps clear up some things for people who might be confused or concerned.

Hey everyone! First off, I'm new to Lemmy and not sure if this is the right place to post - still getting the hang of the federated stuff, and I'm on mobile ATM, so makes it a bit more difficult - but I wanted to share a project I've been working on for many years, on and off.

I'm mainly posting to see if anyone might be interested in contributing - although I know that may be a long shot. I've posted this information below on Reddit /r/INAT and I'm not sure if Lemmy has a specific community for this type of thing, but I couldn't find a specific community so I am posting it here. If this is not the right place, of course just let me know and I can delete the post (or of course a mod can remove).

Background: I have designed a two player abstract strategy board game that I have worked on for more than 10 years - on and off. I have made many attempts to digitize the game to allow online play, but have never managed to finish the project. I am making this attempt again, and thanks to the improvements in LLM coding, I have made quite the progress. But still, I am a very amateur programmer - and have finally decided that the best chance this project has of success is to license the game into the Creative Commons (CC-BY) and Open Source (GNU GPL).

Current Status: The game is currently already implemented to work in the browser against the computer player - but the current computer logic is extremely bad at the game, and will need to be drastically improved. The physical board game rules are complete, and this is just the digital adaptation, however, since this is a open source (and hopefully communty community developed) project I expect the the gameplay to adapt and evolve with rule variations to be implemented for custom gameplay.

Current Contributors: Currently, I have used free AI LLMs to get this current version of the game to where it is at, so the code base will likely need refactored. I posted on INAT a while ago, and there are a few people who have joined the discord and began showing interest in contributing, with one person creating a refactor plan to switch over to the boardgame.io framework, rather than the current vanilla javascript. While this has yet to be implemented, I think it is a solid that we should refactor into eventually.

Who are we looking for: This is my first attempt at trying to digitize this game since releasing it into the creative commons/open source, and I am hopeful that others might be interested in contributing. I am not looking for any specific skillset or requirments to join the project - as I want this to become a game where the players have the capability to be involved in the development process. While programmers are much needed, we can also greatly increase our chances of success (which I measure simply by the amount of plyers who actually play/are involved with the game) by having contributors who can create sound effects, music, art assets, web design, or even simply playtesting the game or spreading the word to find players (honestly, the game is quite niche, and building up a player base will likely not come easily). So in short, anyone and everyone is welcome. . . just hop into the discord and contribute what/when you want or can, with no pressure or obligations.

"Portfolio": https://www.patreon.com/posts/113134314?collection=787282 note: While this isn't strictly a portfolio in the traditional sense, I have written about the long journey of attempting to develop this game over the many years with various teams of people. The other posts on my Patreon, as well as the many links below of the game progress will hopefully suffice to provide a decent amount of background in lieu of a traditional portfolio.
